You can see a picture of the storefront and get some more information about the owner and concept at http://www.newyorkssixth.com/2008/08/knitting-cafe-to-replace-failed-deli-on.html
I am excited about this shop, I hear they have a beautiful garden!

I signed up for their mailing list.  I'm looking forward to actually buying my yarn in person, rather than online.  Woo hoo! Banana

Cute name...  I hope they offer lessons.  I have a sweater that involves some color changes that I've been struggling with. I'd love to go in and get some help with it so I can take it out of the basket of misfit and uncompleted projects.

Signs are up in the window of the knitting cafe on Jersey between 3rd and 4th, in the former Melt! space. They're not open for business yet, though.

The Stockinette
581 Jersey Ave
Jersey City, NJ 07302

For knitting-specific discussion unrelated to the Stockinette, please post to this thread.

cupcakes are a big i hope so, but if the weather is not sweltering, then i would consider bringing some along, if they didn't have them.

gynine said that she is going to have classes for all different things, including one for finishing and blocking, which is my all time biggest weakness when it comes to knitting.

i have no idea what will be stocked, but the good thing is that many brands can be affordable.  brown sheep and berrocco both have varieties that are comparable to lion brand in affordability and might be better quality/less splitty, but that doesn't cost much more.  it really depends on what you are looking for in a cheap yarn, i suppose.

Does anyone know when this knitting cafe will open?

as to the cost of yarn, it varies.  cashmere, silk and baby alpaca yarn will be much more expensive than acrylic yarn
Looks like September 1st based on missa's earlier post.

How much does yarn cost?

For seriously knitting, maybe it costs a lot, but for just getting one skein to play with, as an alternative to a princess doll number 4,083, maybe it's not that much.

It really depends. I'd say in the higher end yarn shops you could be paying anywhere from $8 to $30 a skein where as at a Michaels type store it can range from $1 to $10.

If a kid advances past pot holders and/or doilies it can start to become an expensive habit.

alb- they have knitting sets for children with really big plastic needles.  the thing is that many knitting stores is that they don't offer a wide range of price points with their yarn.

the thing about the knitting cafe is true.  its going to be on jersey, and its called the stockinette knitting cafe.
it opens september 1st, so get ready Laugh

i won't get into the whole acrylic/wool debate.  it would be nice if they offered at least a small selection of lower priced yarn for people that can't or don't want to trek to secaucus

Do you know what the cross street is?

I can't knit, but it seems as if yarn is a good, cheap gift for a small child.

I hope the shop also carries some ribbons and buttons.

Ooh, I heard the rumor about a knitting shop too (possible we heard from the same place?)

I didn't know The Point was coming to J.C.  What about just calling them and asking?

I love cupcakes. Whether they go with knitting or not.

i think we heard it in the same place Laugh

the point was pure speculation and trouble making.
cupcakes are hopes and dreams...

I heard a rumor that a tea and yarn shop is going to be going into the area near the space that was formerly Comfort.

could this be a JC location of The Point Cafe?

i know they dont go with knitting, but do you think they will have cupcakes?
