Palin mistakes fans for protesters at Va. rally

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin mistook some of her own fans for hecklers Monday at a rally that drew thousands.

A massive crowd of at least 20,000 spread across the parking lot of Richmond International Raceway, and scores of people on the outer periphery more than 100 yards from the stage could not hear.

"Louder! Louder!" they began chanting, and the cry spread across the crowd to Palin's left. Some pointed skyward, urging that the volume be increased.

Palin stopped her remarks briefly and looked toward the commotion.

"I hope those protesters have the courage and honor to give veterans thanks for their right to protest," she said.

Some in the crowd tried to shout toward her what was really being said, but she couldn't hear them.

On a sunny day in which many had stood in place for more than three hours without shade, at least 25 people collapsed from heat-related illnesses and three were hospitalized, according to the Henrico County fire department.

Palin had campaigned with John McCain earlier Monday in Virginia Beach, only the second time the GOP ticket has campaigned in Virginia since June. Democrat Barack Obama or his running mate, Joe Biden, together visited the state eight times during that span.

Virginia has been solidly Republican for 40 years but is now a battleground, with both sides locked in a very close race for the state's 13 electoral votes.

Addressing the crowd, Palin largely avoided her recent criticisms of Obama. Instead, she acknowledged the emotion that has built up on both sides, particularly since the financial collapse.

"There is a lot of anger. There is anger at the inside dealing and anger at lobbyists and anger at the greed on Wall Street. There is anger at the Washington elite and there is anger at voter fraud," she said.

She promised a spending freeze if she and McCain win, and evoked cheers of "Drill, Baby, Drill!" in calling for greater domestic mining and oil drilling. The crowd roared when she criticized Biden for remarks he made in Ohio that the United States had little interest in coal-fired electrical power.

The afternoon's loudest ovation came when country music star Hank Williams Jr. offered a rendition of his hit "Family Tradition" that opened by assailing "the left-wing liberal media."

Palin later appeared in northern Virginia, raising half a million dollars at a fundraiser in McLean. About 400 people attended the $1,500 per person event Monday evening at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner. The money goes to the Republican Party since the McCain campaign can't raise any more money under federal rules.

Palin said voters will not be fooled into thinking that McCain's election would be the equivalent of a third term for President Bush. She said McCain "took the gloves off" at his campaign appearances Monday and shouldn't be faulted for pointing out differences in the two tickets' records.

About 40 Democratic protesters waved signs at rush-hour commuters in busy Tysons Corner before the event.

Even as the U.S. confronts two long wars, neither Sen. John McCain nor Sen. Barack Obama believes the country should take the politically perilous step of reviving the military draft.

But the two presidential candidates disagree on a key foundation of any future draft: Mr. Obama supports a requirement for both men and women to register with the Selective Service, while Mr. McCain doesn't think women should have to register.

Also, Mr. Obama would consider officially opening combat positions to women. Mr. McCain would not.

His points about race are ABSOLUTELY valid - but it's a bit disconcerting how a union leader is in-fact trying to influence his entire union to vote for Obama. He was really trying to railroad the audience - and union membership should not constitute an obligation or be subjected to this kind of brainwashing or to vote for ANY political party.

GOP Battles the Spread of Democracy

One Bush administration cover story for going to war in Iraq to provide hundreds of billions of dollars in no-bid contracts for Halliburton and other corporate cronies was that it was to spread democracy in the Mideast.

Meanwhile, the president's party continues to battle the spread of democracy in the Midwest.

With less than a month to go before the election, the collateral damage from Republican efforts to fight the spread of democracy continues to pile up.

The latest victims are convicted felons who are looking to get jobs to support themselves and their families without resorting to crime.

A Republican National Committee official has attacked voter registration groups in Wisconsin for employing convicted felons. The party's chief lawyer said the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) hired seven convicted felons to register voters.

The natural reaction to such an accusation should be: So what?

Even though Republican legislators are constantly trying to demonize ex-offenders, state law recognizes that it's very much in the public interest for felons to be able to obtain legitimate employment. In fact, it's against the law to discriminate against a job applicant solely on the basis of a criminal record unless the crime has some possible connection with the job responsibilities.

Banks don't have to hire convicted embezzlers, day care centers don't have to hire convicted sex offenders and so on. But unless there is some direct connection that would bar hiring a convicted felon, we all benefit when ex-offenders get jobs and become solid citizens.

In fact, that was the first reaction from ACORN when the organization was attacked for employing felons.

"We have a lot of folks with felony records (in this state)," said Carolyn Castore, state political director for ACORN, "and, frankly, they need jobs."

It's unlikely any of those employees were ever convicted of vote fraud because, despite the exaggerated claims of Republicans, the U.S. Attorney's Office for southeastern Wisconsin and the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office have found organized vote fraud to be virtually nonexistent.

The fact that someone may have been convicted on drug charges or other unrelated offenses has nothing to do with registering voters.

In the absence of any disqualifying connection, ACORN as well as the Milwaukee Election Commission considered employment discrimination against felons as voter registration workers to be illegal under state law.

Republicans are citing an opinion back in April by a staff member of the Government Accountability Board, which oversees elections, claiming that convicted felons were not allowed to serve as registration workers. That was news to both ACORN and the Milwaukee Election Commission. None of the materials provided by the state to local election officials say felons are barred from registering voters.

Although Republicans enjoy trashing ex-offenders, their primary aim this time was not to stir up hatred against felons. It was to try to thwart efforts to spread democracy by registering more voters.

Republicans have another underlying motive for attacking ACORN. It is an organization that engages in that dreaded community organizing. It actually tries to give a voice to the poor and most vulnerable among us.

Not only that, but the most dangerous community organizer of all, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, actually did some legal work for ACORN earlier in his career.

Before Republicans began demonizing community organizing, do you remember what the first President George Bush used to call community organizations? He called them "a thousand points of light." Father Bush's ulterior motive for praising the work of such organizations was that he wanted community volunteers to take over all the government's responsibilities so Republicans could continue slashing programs for the poor.

Community organizations can't do everything, but, clearly, organizations like ACORN are on the front lines of promoting democracy in this country while Republicans are trying to stop its spread.

Republicans are particularly opposed to increasing participation in democracy in Milwaukee with its large African-American and Latino populations.

The Republicans' concept of democracy goes back to the original idea of our Founding Fathers to limit voting to white, male property owners.

That was glaringly obvious when Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen formed a joint task force to investigate allegations of vote fraud on Election Day with Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm and the Milwaukee Police Department.

Let's see. There are 72 counties in Wisconsin. Within Milwaukee County, there are 19 municipalities. In only one of those 72 counties and in only one of the 19 municipalities within that county is the state attorney general setting up a task force to fight vote fraud on Nov. 4.

As they say on Sesame Street, what makes the city of Milwaukee not like the others? There's just something about that Gordon on Sesame Street that makes him seem like the kind of person who would commit vote fraud

Yes, unfortunately, given what's at stake, opposing views from both camps, America's deterioration (economic, worldwide perception, civil liberties, evisceration of middle-class, etc.), it has created a cauldron of invective and diatribes from both camps.  However, I don't see it reaching the same fevered escalated pitch from the Dems.  You posted a picture of some presumably liberal Williamsburg type hipsters with an incendiary profane T-shirt.  I and others on here are highlighting events/forums where the behavior feels like it might actually incite action -- a lynch mob mentality which has long precedent in this country I am sure you well know.  Google Without Sanctuary in case you forgot.  Moreover, Palin is seemingly a more polarizing force than BHO (yes merely from my perspective but even from an objective standpoint in not believing in live and let live mindset... e.g. her strict stance on abortion and possible curtailment of women's rights, banning books she deems offensive, reparative therapy for homosexuals, associated with secessionist party, propensity to forget about the separation of church and state) and she's not engendering calls for "off with her head", "kill her," "terrorist" or female camerawomen being told to "sit down bitch" from people attending Obama rallies.  And I that is the case b/c BHO is not resorting to the same tactics or nasty playbook -- also call it elitist if you will, but he doesn't seem to attract that element.

That's OK, being here in CA I just got an ad (in this thread) for "Vote Yes on Prop 8", which is the "Marriage Protection Act" here in CA that seeks to stop gay marriage in the state.

I made sure to click it to waste their money, and I'm sure they'd be glad that I donated to No On Prop 8.

Google has no "negate" option for matching on terms - if they see a term, whether discussed positively or negatively, they assume it's associated and serve an ad for it.  Rumor has it that the same "Yes on Prop 8" ads were being served on gay pr0n sites.

Your premise rests on the idea that McCain/Palin supporters would only behave the way they do in the video I posted if they were directed to do so by McCain/Palin stoking those supporters into behaving thus. I don't think that premise holds much weight.

In that case, we have no argument, and I have unfairly lumped you into a group to which you do not belong. You have my apology.

You characterized my motives for posting the video as "offering evidence" that McCain/Palin is race baiting. I don't know whether those hateful, bigoted folks behaved that way before the shift into "palling around with terrorists" and "who is he really OOGA-BOOGA-BOOGA" mode. Some of the McCain supporters I have met and spoken to here in Pennsylvania have certainly had their moments, and I think letting those people off the hook for their own bigotry is really absurd, as if these thoughts and prejudices just sprung up out of nowhere.

Whether these folk are being "stoked" by the campaign, either directly or indirectly, is a separate conversation from the fact that these folk exist in 2008, and that they are so proud of themselves for spouting lies and bigotry, and that they are lining up for a McCain/Palin rally, whether they were being encouraged or not.

Oh, but they are being encouraged, they are being stoked. They are being encouraged and stoked by Obama supporters who are stalking them at McCain rallies, pushing cameras in their faces, and asking leading questions in an attempt to get them to say something stupid. Such efforts always bear fruit with a certain percentage of supporters, which can then be cut out of the much larger crowd and posted as examples of what idiots your opponents' supporters are.

Share with us, NON. What percentage of the McCain supporters you have personally encountered in Pennsylvania have lined up with people in the video you posted?

On 9/11/01, he said that he didn't regret planting bombs, and wished he had done more. Sounds unrepentant to me.

The NY Times wrote an article about Ayers for which he was interviewed, which was published ON 9/11/01. It's hard to have an interview appear in print on 9/11/01 unless that interview actually took place before 9/11/01. Morbidly accidental timing, but Ayers did not say on or after the terrorist attacks on 9/11/01 that he did not regret and wished he'd done more. Click the link, if your into the whole "facts" thing.

But I like my facts more on the "facty" side, and after digging through the lies and insinuations churned out by McCain/Palin, from their own lips, I'm not buying what they're selling: i.e. that when you sit on a Board with Ayers, you sit on a Board with Bin Laden.

So, extending my hypothetical with Nikki, if John McCain had been appointed to a board by an abortion clinic bomber that hadn't killed anyone, you'd be okay with it? Enquiring minds want to know.

If you're asking whether McCain having sat on a board with a former abortion clinic bomber, would Obama's campaign be justified in repeatedly and strategically painting McCain as somebody who "pals around with" abortion clinic bombers by association, I would gladly tell you the answer to that question is no. Even though the label "abortion clinic bomber" doesn't even remotely compare to the one-two strategic punch of labelling somebody who has already been perceived due to his name, ethnicity, and general "otherness" to be a Muslim and a terrorist sympathizer. Too bad you didn't ask that question, because it's the intellectually honest version of the one you laid out.
