TONIGHT!

BRING. IT. ON.

Local restaurant chefs battle it out in a momentous event of culinary skill at the Jersey City Food Co-Operative's 1st Annual SPRING CHEF SHOWDOWN!

On June 14, 2012 from 6pm-10pm, JC Food Co-Op will host a competition testing the skills of some of Jersey City's most impressive culinary talents.  The event will feature one secret ingredient and half a dozen local restaurant chefs battling it out for bragging rights and the coveted JC Food Co-Op’s Chef Showdown prize.

The event will be held at Jersey City Food Co-Op’s distribution center at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in the “Five Corners” section of Jersey City on Thursday June 14 at 6pm. The ticket price is $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Proceeds will go to support the JC Food Co-Op as it continues its goal of providing fresh local food to all Jersey City residents at a fair price.

Restaurants including Skinner’s Loft, Taj Mahal and Made With Love have eagerly signed up and others are being confirmed. “I’m really excited to be involved”, says Sumit Rana, manager at Taj Mahal. “We love showcasing our cuisine in unique ways.”

The secret ingredient, sold exclusively through the Co-Op’s Pre-Shop buying club program, will be delivered to chefs two days before the event. Event participants and a special jurors panel comprised of local politicians and community leaders will then vote on the most mouth-watering rendition of the ingredient during the festivities at St. Paul’s. Live music will be performed by Sea of Otters and an impressive Tricky Tray with over 40 impressive items will add to the fun.

To purchase tickets, to nominate a local restaurant chef or for more information please visit the Jersey City Food Co-Op’s website at www.jcfoodcoop.coop or call 201-500-JCFC (5232).

Secret ingredients, timed cooking, celebrity judges, it’s not an episode of world-renowned television show “Iron Chef,” it’s Chef Showdown in Jersey City.

Much in the same vein as the popular Food Network show, Chef Showdown will offer 6 popular local chefs the opportunity to compete for two titles one based on 100 audience votes and one based on the votes of a celebrity panel.

The proceeds will go to support Jersey City Food Cooperative, a healthy and inexpensive local market.

“It’s really about supporting good local food in Jersey City, supporting the whole city,” said Alicia DeLia, spokesperson for the Co-Op. “Some people have the means to spend five dollars on an apple in Whole Foods but we’re trying to make it really affordable.” said DeLia.

In the two years since its inception, the Co-Op has raised money through beer and wine tasting events, but this is the first time it will be hosting a show like this.

The Co-Op is in the process of searching for a permanent space and DeLia says the money will help the store to continue to serve the community while they search.

The showdown is another opportunity for Jersey City residents to taste high-quality food for a low price admission to the showdown is $25 for advance tickets and $30 at the door.

So far, Skinner’s Loft, Taj Mahal and Made with Love have been confirmed participants but chefs from more restaurants will be participating.

“I’m really excited to be involved,” Sumit Rana, the manager at Taj Mahal told the Co-Op. “We love showcasing our cuisine in unique ways.”

Five days before they compete, the chefs will be told the mystery ingredient, and three days before, DeLia will drop it off. By the time they face each other, the chefs should be prepared enough to create delicious dishes that the audience and celebrity panel will enjoy.

The celebrity panel includes some familiar faces: Michele Massey, Jersey City Councilwoman; Nidia Lopez, Jersey City Councilwoman; Chelo Mercado of the Grassroots Community Space; Ed Ramirez of Ed’s Salvage Company and Trish Szymanski of Uptown Crew. The event will also feature live music by Sea of Otters and Tricky Tray.

The showdown will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Jersey City Food Co-Op’s distribution center at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in the “Five Corners” section of Jersey City. For advance tickets, call visit the Co-Op’s website at http://www.jcfoodcoop.coop or call 201-500-JCFC (5232).
