Totally! I have (honestly) always wanted to go there.

Anyone up for Ringside?  I heard they have a "discounted ladies night".

I went there after a long night of drinking in the city and it was interesting.  Got beer to go in a quart container with a hole punched in it, with a straw in a brown paper bag.  They were closing so they gave us these to drink outside.

I did hear that they do have great food on site or across the street..little vague on the details.  So it may be worth an afternoon trip.  ;D

Cyprus?  ??? No way.  >:(

 ;D

I mean, first Williamsburg, then Philly, and now, Cyprus?

Aw, Bobble is sad that no one got his joke, so he had to post again to explain it.

I just wanted to make sure that folks knew I had nothing against the bar.

I have been there a few times (namely when I used to work promoting Brahma). The crowd is not bad and there is a nice outdoor space in back.
I also recall the owner being quite nice and a pool table and possibly darts. The bar is surprisingly big inside!

The Park Tavern is a cool spot and the burgers are YUMMY!

I also went to the bar on the corner of West Side and Clendenny.  I have no idea what's its name.  I went on a Sunday afternoon and it was my three friends, the owner and myself.  The owner was very nice.  The drinks were nicely priced.  I had Grey Goose and tonic for $4.  They also have a pool table and jukebox.

And there's a spot on Erie and like 1st that has no sign. What's the deal? I doubt it is a Dive at this stage of gentrification but perhaps it once was.

Park Tavern, Westside and Communipaw.

In my opinion, the best bar in JC; Guinness, Blue Moon and a host of others on tap.  The jukebox has a good selection of classic rock, Irish and country music.  The whole place smells like wood, the bar tables are old wooden cable spindles turned on their side, in the winter there is a real wood fire and in the summer they have an outdoor space in the back.

The regulars are mainly JCPD and JCFD with a smattering of younger “precious ghetto” inhabitants thrown in.  They also do burgers and hot dogs and I’m told they were good too.

If you want to come here, beware there is no sign on the door and I wasn’t able to find any reference to it online (hence the lack of a definitive address above).  Just look for the place that has the old wooden shingle front on the Westside of the street right off Communipaw.

+1 on Park Tavern. I had a great cheeseburger and fries and two Blue Moons on our lunch stop during the West Side hike. This place has a great atmosphere and I'd head back anytime.

For the most hardcore dive bar aficionados,

This place also has a fire in the winter, so I understand,

Not more.  They closed down a few months ago.  I used to love that the entire back room including the pool balls were so yellow from all of the smoking

I would have thought the same as the barmaid about "market traders". So what do you call a stockbroker over there? A "securities monger"?

We tend to call them "Tosspots" or "Wankers".   >:D

Cue up the Yankee/Scots misunderstanding........

"Market traders?  You have a stock exchange in Glasgow?"

"Eh?  No, I mean market traders... like people who sell veggies and shit off a stall, y'know?".

"What?"

And so on....  Life is just too complicated these days........

No sorry, I haven't had the excuses to go out on the piss lately.  However, I did stop for a couple of beers at the JSQ pub last Thursday night and I've got to say that place wins the best opening hours in JC hands down, it closes at 2AM and opens at 6AM.

I was talking to the barmaid about this and she tells me the place gets busy at 6am with nightshift workers getting off, I told her "Yeah, where I'm from in Glasgow you find a lot of pubs have hours like this, usually for market traders".

I love dive bars, but the McGinley Square Pub is a nightmare.  I've watched the bartender pour half finished glasses of wine back into the bottle and then pour from that bottle.  The inside is kind of nice, but it's a horrible place.

:o

I laughed loudly, out loud, at home all by myself at every one of sosh's reviews.  Please review more things.  Any things, really.

I may, however, have to attempt to add to this thread a "downtown dive bars" list.  I put that in quotation signs because I fear it may really be an oxymoron.  But iof they're there, I will find them . . .
