July 30th, 1916 - Black Tom Explosion

This should be near and dear to us for several reasons:  the prominent German-American population at the time, the effects of a terrorist action in our midst, and of course, recent complaints of fireworks.

Remember, those that do not remember their history are doomed to a career in Accounting!

Jersey City agency OK's controversial 5-year contract for director
Published: Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 6:40 PM     Updated: Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 7:48 PM
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

"The Jersey City Incinerator Authority Board of Commissioners Tuesday night awarded JCIA chief Oren K. Dabney a new, five-year contract that comes with a nearly 5 percent salary hike. The new pact, approved unanimously by the seven-member board, gives Dabney a base salary of $126,215, a 4.8 percent increase from his current pay. He will also be entitled to annual increases of up to 4 percent after the first year.

Dabney's current contract was not set to expire until 2014. The commissioners awarded him the new agreement, which starts Aug. 1, and also provides Dabney with a JCIA-paid car, as recognition of "superior services rendered," according to the resolution awarding the new pact.

The JCIA is an autonomous agency founded in 1951 to pick up and dispose of city trash. It employs around 140 workers, and its roughly $33 million annual budget is funded mostly with city dollars. "

Click link above for complete article.
Should this position be eliminated before 2014, when the original contract would expire with no future payout other than lifetime health benefits, the city will owe $450,000.  Nice gift.

Who is getting what for this?

Vacant school in Lafayette neighborhood of Jersey City is slated to become condos by next summer
Published: Saturday, June 23, 2012, 3:01 AM     Updated: Saturday, June 23, 2012, 8:45 AM
By M.G. De Guzman / The Jersey Journal

"Located in one of Jersey City’s older neighborhoods, the vacant All Saints School, at 305 Whiton St., will reopen its doors next summer as a condominium complex. The $5.6 million development is expected to start construction next month.

While the exterior will remain the same, the interior will be redeveloped to create 25 units in what officials say is the first adaptive reuse of a vacant property in the Lafayette neighborhood in more than a decade . . . "

What do you think was the cause of the deadly wreck Sunday?

What to you think will be the finding/determination?

Most importantly, what do you think the JCPD should do to prevent any more of these senseless deaths?
