I needed a new printer six months ago.  I found this site useful.  They evaluate and summarize the reviews in effect.  I also wanted a laser this time, because I print very low volume and the ink jet cartridges would dry out even if I wasn't printing.  You'll see that Brother gets the top three rankings for lasers, which may seem suspect.  So I checked their ink jet reviews and Brother doesn't even show up in the fourteen models they mention there.  I got the cheap model 2040 back then, but the models have been updated since.  Your needs would definitely require a better model than that.  I've had no problem with mine, but my printing volume is low.

I have an HP laserjet that I've had for about five years.  It's been perfect, until just recently. But I think I did something wrong so I can't blame it on the printer (yet).  And it wasn't wildly expensive, as I recall.

Keep me posted on what you get because if I can't solve my printer problem, I may need a new one too.

Thank you all.  I don't do much media type stuff, so I'm not concerned with printing photos etc. I want to be able to print regular documents in word and excel for business presentation.  I think I would be willing to sacrafice color for higher quality and speed in printing.

I bought an Epson RX680 a few months ago and it works a charm.  Great photo printing, media card reader, LCD screen for viewing photos you haven't uploaded yet, scanner and copier.  My only complaint is that if are printing regular documents, even on the lowest quality setting, it is pretty slow.

We own a Canon Pixma 4300 which we are very happy with- however, it does not have a scanner.  It does a nice job of printing, and the ability to purchase separate color cartridges, without having to sell a major organ, is nice.

However, it really depends on what you want the printer for; we chose ours because it does a nice job on both "regular" printing, and printing photos.

I've had an HP laser printer (black & white only) that's been pretty much maintenance free since I got it a few years ago.

A year ago I bought a Brother ink jet, which I think is a piece of crap.  I would certainly welcome your suggestions on a good printer to buy for my home. I wouldn't mind spending a little extra for a lazer jet.

Thanks
