Good evening wiredjc, first let me apologize if necro'ing this thread is inappropriate, I wasn't sure if it was proper to start a new thread or continuing this one.

Now to the real reason I signed up to post, my barber of the last 15 years has relocated to another state, I'm looking for a recommendation for a barber in the heights or downtown area for a men's haircut. I'm looking for a more traditional place that doesn't blast loud rap music, so please keep this in mind when making a recommendation. I'm also looking for a price range of about $10-$15, if the place is worth it I'd be willing to go up to $20. I'm looking for just a simple buzz, nothing exotic.

I appreciate everyone's input into the topic.

Cheers!

what about that place on Columbus, about half a block from the Grove Street path towards Barrow, across the street from Video Rentall and the medical center and the parking lot, in front of the wall graffitti that you walk down the stairs to enter. I see brothers go in there and come out looking sharp...

It may be obvious, but I cut my own hair.

Hey, me too! Here's the website: Dr. Mike and Son (formerly from Astor Place). Not to hijack, but did any of you bridge-and-tunnel 1980s teens make the trek into the city to get your cuts at Astor Place? Those were the days...

I went with a frirend once back in the late 80's/early 90's, while her husband was getting his cut the barber was asking if were sisters blah blah blah, long story short the guy ended up being from the same town I was born in in Cuba and knew who my parents were - small world!

Do any of these shops do afros (or can someone with a short, well maintained afro help a brother out?)?

Thanks!
O0

I would check out N'Joyable but don't go to any of the women.  The term appointment is used very liberally so you may end up waiting well past your actual appointment time.  The barber is a nice guy and he generally seems to be pretty busy.  I'm blanking on his name.  I'm not sure he takes appointments.

I've had horrible experiences at Icon on Jersey Avenue.  Stay away from that place.  Long story but customer service is not a strong point.

If you have access to a car, here are my suggestions.

When my hair was short and relaxed I used to go to Michael at Majestic Hair Salon
1733 J F Kennedy Boulevard
Jersey City, NJ 07311
201-333-9527
He did a really good job with my cut.

My hair is natural now and I go to http://www.nedjetti.com/  She's in Bloomfield and she's really talented and always takes me on time which I like.

There is a place on Grove Street right across from City Hall that you might want to check out, called N-Joyable Hair Designs you might want to check out.

I had such an awesome Jew'Goose-fro (immaqwadahPorch-chew-geese) in Jr High that me mates corrupted the Cheech and Chong classic "Basektball Jones" into "Aff-a-ro (insert rhyming last name here).

That said, the joint on Newark around the corner from Brunswick seem to have a decent "BarberShop" clientele when I pass by.

Cutting a natural is a whole 'nuther art.

It's not in JC and currently my hair has been declared a disaster area due to lack of attention but when I do get it cut I go here:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/dr-mike-and-son-new-york

It's just a spit from the WTC and a haircut runs you about 12 bucks....

Cheese 'n' Rice, SamSter!!

That's like, 46,537 lira!!

When my hair would get like  O0 this by the end of September,
I would get it buzzed like  8) this.  One summer a gal friend
braided my hair like :bozo: this. it looked good for 2 weeks but hurt like the dickens.

Hair is like munney - you don't care about it if you don't have any thanks, Hurtle's signature generator.  I have less and less every day where I want it, more and more where I don't.  Wrong color, too.

I can't contribute any worthwhile suggestions here in the hood - I have gone to Dominick's in the past.  I have only done the salon thingo for big buck$ mebbe 3 times, never felt it was a good value.  What can :nerd: I say?

I concur with SamSwise on one issue - continutity.  Stick with the same shearer and you'll train them to make you look GOOD :homer:

I've been getting my haircut at the same place in Manhattan since 1991. It's called Limitone on 7th Ave in the W. Village.  Vito Limitone the owner, and a genuine off the boat Italian cut's my hair there, though he has several operators.  I think does a very good job. The price is about $27.

I haven't been myself, but they do men's cuts at Rickie's Hair & Beauty Salon (544 1/2 Jersey Ave., at Newark Ave.; (201) 209-0005). He's great.

I rely on the Oster 76.  ;D  Before that, I went to Buzz Cuts in, um, Hoboken early on Sat. morning. Decent hair cuts. Decent eye candy.  ;D
