i'm not so sure about all this. if there was anyone who hated the webmaster and was pulled and prodded by his ongoing removal of my posts, signatures and avatars, it was me. and if there was anyone bored by the same old topics (of which i was part of the mix) it was me. But this is sorta like moving to the burbs and missing the old bastard neighbors you once had. If there's no-one to bitch about, what's an misanthrope like me to do?

Besides, I'm not all that fond of Missa and NON anyway. You guys suck too.
And I'm a lazy bastard. Posting on JClist was 2nd nature. This is like learning to have sex all over again. Maybe I'm too old for both.

So we shall see. i wil sit back and observe for a few weeks. Rabbits don't dig options.

I'm glad there is a new site for a few reasons:

1- I can swear.

2- My wired persona can be far more megalomaniacal than my jclist persona.

Seriously though, about the personal attacks.  Please.  Who cares if a few names get called?  NON, for example, is a godless communist homosexual rabblerousing, nerfherding bastard.

But that doesn't mean I don't like him.

nerfherding? i resemble that remark...

and i didn't think that a persona could get more megalomaniacal than your jclist persona. at least this side of newportvoice.org.

care to moderate our 'philosophy' forum?

It looks like I'm late to the party. It figures this site would launch the week I'm out of town and actually working. All the same, it's my privilege to extend a laurel and hearty handshake to our new...administrators of this here site. Congratulations and thanks to GLX, missa and NON for your efforts, and I look forward to returning to my normal schedule of unceasing posting and shouting when I get back to JC.

Now if only I can figure out how to transfer the glossary thread over here...

PS: what's the wiredjc equivalent of 'listers'? Wiredsters?

You guys all suck. Now I've got two Jersey City BBSes to keep track of?

Couldn't you have, I dunno, found out where the servers that house jclist are and just kidnap them? Or sick the rabbitsquared on them?

Seriously, though, good luck with the site. It'll be a pain in the ass keeping tabs on both of you for a while, but my guess is that (as McGrieves said before me) eventually one of you will die out, and since I'm a total brand whore, I'll go wherever.

Good luck, and may the best list win!
(oh, and thanks everyone for keeping your respective handles [and avatars] . . . otherwise this thing would be a nightmare)

edit: If jclist goes back to just being a Newport tool, then that would suit me fine, too . . .

I can honestly say that i was torn about registering on this site. On one hand i have been a jclister for almost 2 years, i have met countless number of wonderful people on that site and i consider many of them close friends. I also do not believe i have ever had my posts arbitrarily deleted. So as you could imagine, i was not too thrilled to see posts on this site bashing jclist, especially when everything appeared to be fine and dandy less than a week ago.

On the second hand, many of the friends i mentioned above will call this site home, and i would hate to throw away good friendships over something so trivial as website loyalty.

So with that said, i will post on both boards and I hope that this does not become a "look what they are saying on jclist" site.

Dave-

Welcome to wiredjc.com. Please take everything written in this thread in the spirit it is intended - an expression of some of the reasons for starting this site, and a dialogue about how the moderators and the users of this forum would like it to evolve. It'd be sort of impossible to reference these issues without at least some form of venting frustrations about where most of us have spent our local online "lives" in the past however many years/months/weeks. I agree with elgoo that we'd love nothing more than to get all that stuff out of our systems and move on to greener pastures (as it were).

On the flip side, however, I don't want to automatically censor or manipulate the dialogue on this subject, or pretend like jclist doesn't exist. I wish Dan well over there, and I have no intention of giving any wiredjc users grief for continuing to post or shoutbox there. This fish bowl is plenty big enough to support multiple forums, and healthy competition certainly never hurts.

Again, we're glad to see you here, and the staff at wiredJC.com understands where you are coming from.

Welcome Skadave!!

Said it before and I'll say it again...I have no interest in turning this into a war or a soap opera.  I think most of the posts above by other folks indicate that everyone else pretty much feels the same way.  Basically, I think we all just want to continue doing what we've always done on JCList.  It had simply gotten to the point, for many of us, where the arbitrary enforcement reached a level that was just beyond the pale.  It's awesome actually to know that you've never experienced it, but many of us have.  Repeatedly.

Personally I hope we're not even talking about this past this week.

dave,

i think that there are alot of people who will remain on jclist, and will come visit here too.  although this might have grown out of discontent, i believe that using that force positively to create something new rather than stagnate and rail against something i dont like will serve myself and others well.

i am not sure which "bashing posts" you are speaking of, and if you would PM me the titles of them, i would like to look them over. maybe there was more humor or sarcasm in them than bashing, but anything is possible

Thanks Dave, and I hope you can see that most of what's said about JC List is merely out of frustration, and I hope, on behalf of everyone here, that this can peacefully coexist with the JC List community.  JC List will continue to be a valuable community resource, and we hope to be one as well in our own way.

Some history -- if memory serves correct, jclist started out to be a Newport list.  It gradually morphed to encompass the rest of downtown and then to all of JC.  While most posters seem to live downtown, I don't get the impression any longer that discussion about parts of JC other than downtown are verboten.

so long as the banner atop jclist continues to read Downtown Jersey City List, it still delivers a pretty strong message to 'outsiders' that it's more of a place for ward E residents than it is for the rest of the city. that's just my perspective as somebody who lives on the west side, and has watched the whole evolution of JC happen first-hand over the last 30 years.

while discussion of NONdowntown Jersey City neighborhoods may no longer be verboten, i still wouldn't say it's encouraged. (Note the only neighborhoods given its own board there is 'Newport', and it's in the "downtown jersey city neighborhoods" section of the Forums).

At the outset, before a name for this website was even registered, one personal goal of mine was to make this forum a place that represents all of Jersey City, not just downtown. My tenure at jclist began after observing some serious hostility and disrespect towards the "rest" of the city west of the NJ Turnpike (thus my username), and I was glad to see that the tendency to elevate downtown by putting the rest of the city down has seemed to fall out of fashion, without disappearing entirely. If in no other way, WiredJC distinguishes itself from jclist by putting the emphasis on the entire community instead of a few individual zipcodes, I will consider that a significant distinction.

I'm glad to hear you say that this board is not a replacement to jclist.  I still consider Dan Falcon a friend and he put a huge effort into his list.

kudos kudos kudos to NON, Missa and GLX!!!!!

in total agreement with all about personal attacks and not having this site be about bashing jclist......which is still at times, a valid community resource.

but arbitrary/ inconsistent  editorial policy is  a downer and i certainly hope that you guys put some thought into that. alot of tough questions there and alof of responsibility.

i certainly like NONs thoughts about not being focused on downtown only.....and i think theres alot of interesting things going on in the NY metro area outside of JC as well. i'm represented by a gallery in NY...but would never post notices for my openings because of the jclist "JC only" events policy....subsequently, alot of people don't know much about what i do.......

anyhow...great early effort...this feels revolutionary!! let me know if there is anything i could do to help.....good luck!! and i look forward to seeing this grow. And I really appreciate and enjoy all of the folks that i've met through jclist,,,and look forward to continuing those relationships here!!

best,

thanks grieves - your input and perspective are definitely appreciated. and the point of your food-board story is well-taken.

i think things start to get murky when people have wildly differing ideas of what something like an "attack" is, let alone a "personal attack". Everybody has a different gauge for sensitivity, sarcasm, and desire to have their point be made. One person's "attack" is another person's expression of dissatisfaction with some thing or somebody. We will definitely do our best to put together a fair, coherent set of guidelines for posting and using this site, and to enforce those "rules" evenly and openly. Certain things will end up succumbing to subjectivity, but we'll do our best to be clear and honest about the reasoning behind administrative decisions.

Also, to end the speculation as to at least my own personal motives in being involved in a new community forum - i have no desire to bad mouth jclist or its webmaster. He created an excellent site, which i credit for putting me in touch with some really fantastic people, and I thank him for it. For me, it was simply time to move on.

Jersey City is a big, dynamic place, and there is room aplenty for multiple forums. Any enthusiasm for starting WiredJC should not be construed as a desire to put jclist or any other board out of business. I imagine plenty of users will continue to be involved in both sites, and encourage them to do so. There will likely be things on offer at jclist that we may choose not to focus on, and vice versa.

Also, please keep in mind that this website is a collective effort between myself, missa, and GLX, the grandmaster flash who threw this entire site together. we have discussed the possibility of asking others to be involved in moderating specific topic areas of interest to them, and we're continuing to bat around ideas about where we want this site to go and how we want it to look and feel.

Thanks for all the input, and again, please feel free to use the Suggestions forum at the bottom of the FORUMS page to let us know what you think about the site, soup to nuts.

As for personal attacks and insults, I know not everyone agrees with me and such is life.  However, I see no useful purpose in attacking anyone, whether they are jclist, NWA or WiredJC members.  It’s just bad karma.  I bring this up because there will probably be a lot of animosity towards jclist.  Some people had horrendous experiences and need to vent.  I only hope that once the venting is over, that’ll be the end of it.

Totally understood.  I have no desire to turn my online life here into an Anti-JCList diatribe.  JCList has given me many many hours of enjoyment.  I hope that WiredJC will give me many, many more, without the stomach aches that came as a result of the Wizard Of Oz-like guy behind the curtain.  I will probably vent, but it will all be in fun, or at the very least my bile will hopefully be well disguised as friendly banter.  I don't want to be a drag, you know.  And I certainly don't want to turn this into a soap opera.  It ain't worthy of that.  But man, am I happy to be liberated.

I too have seen this and agree.  It becomes counter-productive to set up an alternative space for discourse and then have the conversation constantly turn back to the old space.  It's a natural outgrowth of the experience but hopefully it dies down pretty quickly and everyone moves on.

With that said- GO WIRED!  Kudos for all the hard work in setting this space up, and in advance for what I'm sure will be additional heavy lifting in the future.  I've been fortunate to meet such a great group of people and I look forward to argu... uhm, engaging in high-minded civil discourse with you for years to come- ya douchebags!  ;D

I’m gonna throw in my 2 cents here and I hope it’s taken in the spirit it’s intended.

What happened here is far from out of the ordinary and I’ve seen it several times – a faction of people become dissatisfied with a board for whatever reason and set up a new board with the best of intentions.  Then that board falls into the same traps as the old one.  Meet the old boss, same as the new boss sort of thing.  I truly hope that history won’t repeat itself here.

In my opinion, a codified set of rules is an absolute must.  I’m not saying to get bogged down in rules; on the contrary, the fewer the better.  And if a rule isn’t enforced, it shouldn’t be a rule.  Another thing that I strongly believe is that for a forum to be successful, the board must be bigger than any individual or individuals.

To give a concrete example, several individuals became dissatisfied with what was then the largest foodie board, chowhound.com.  They were unhappy with the dictatorial policies of its founder.  They formed a new board, egullet.org and it became hugely successful, so successful that it is now the largest food board.  However, it was still run by individuals with agendas.  While egullet still exists, it’s a mere shell of what It was and totally lacking in character.  So a group of dissatisfied egullet members formed another board, mouthfulsfood.org.  They use the novel approach of rotating moderators so as not to give any one individual too much power.  Rules and changes are added and amended by the rotating board of moderators.  It seems to have worked… they’ve been around a couple of years and the board is still as vibrant as the day it started.

Here’s wishing WiredJC a long and happy life.
