R.I.P to the Kim's that could never quite decide what kind of store it wanted/needed to be.  This was only a matter of time.  I agree that in many ways it was really the location that doomed it from the start.  A smaller Grove Street branch, perhaps managed with more focus, might have done better.

yeah...i always thought that was an odd location for a Kim's considering that their flagship store is on St Mark's Place.
not the right countercultural demographic in newport.  i think that it would have worked on grove, though.....

I think a place like that probably would have support in Jersey City, just not in Newport.  They should have opened on Grove St or Newark Ave.  That said, it is still sad....

could be -- as i live near journal sq., i had to (and did) want to make the trip every time. the cafe always seemed packed but free wireless does not the bookish cineaste make, evidently, or evidently not in newportvelt...

mindful of an earlier thread on local bookstores (as spotty albeit eclectic as the selection was, kim's was pretty much the only good one in jc and without much competition, you ask me), if jersey city wants to retain some sort of even notional hipster credibility in the face of a 1-to-1 condo-to-human ratio, being able to support a real art film rental place like kim's seems essential. so much for the notional...

wow, this snuck up on me -- kim's at pavonia newport is shuttering its "west bank" (jimiaylerTM) operation as i type this sunday evening. prices for dvds and books are at low, lost-our-lease prices. at least i got a free pass on a late fee...  :-\

vaya con dios, kim's jc -- now i'll HAVE to get a netflix account! this was normally my excuse to never bother -- why put sctv or fassbinder (or rivette or tarkovsky or varda or romero or &c. &c. &c....) in your queue when you can snap them up right now at kim's, maybe a cheap copy of man and his symbols and/or harper's and/or some blank dvd-rs while you're there.

the writing was on the wall when they got rid of the documentary and music selections. actually, i guess the downward slide started when they no longer offered microwavable chicken teriakis to go -- now, those were freakin' GOOD!

so long, kim's -- you all come back now, you hear?
