Will their portions still make me think I mistakenly ordered from the child's menu?

who cares if they are nice or not? really... to me all that matters is...

do they really have $5 margaritas? do they really have table service? are the tacos still $2.50-$3? since they are now serving GAUC, is it better than what I make myself? are the new tables and chairs comfortable?

love this place love their "attitude" haters be damned

Sign says they are re-opening today at 5pm. Probably not a hoax.

according to the other site they are aiming to reopen the 2nd week of December. they will be expanding the menu will be including GAUCAMOLE & margaritas & michiladas ect ect ect

all beefs and gripes with this place aside they have given me consistent good relatively cheap food for years now. this is great news and hopefully they continue to just do their thing. does that mean there won't be times where ill be left scratching my head as to how thing actually work there.

Taqueria Downtown is still closed from hurricane damage.

A sign on the front window says that they are working as hard as they can to get things running.

Some neighbors put up a hand-made sign next to it that says, "Come back, Taqueria. We love you!" or something like that.

A big pile of broken plaster, sheetrock and other detritus in front of the store seems to indicate that damage was extensive. It's in the basement of an exposed corner building on Grand St. that got several feet of floodwater during the storm.

Though derided for "attitude" below, I think this was a pretty good place -- active, energetic vibe, good tacos, nice and fast crew.

I hope to see them up and running again soon.

Walking last night, after LiTMArtfest, not sure where I was heading - always potential for trouble.

I found it - Taqueria! "We're open for take out only," I'm told.  I order dos carnitas and ask if I can have a can of Tecate (yeah, I know, you're saying, 'you didn't have anything with you?').  I'm handed a cold can with a lime wedge on top.

"Can I sit over here on a stool and wait?" "Sure," as the staff goes about wiping up.  I pop the top, crush the lime, enjoy that cold metallic buzz.  Maybe 3 minutes and out comes a lunchbag, I walk up to the take out counter as he announces my name.  I go back to where I've left my beer, sit down, look at the bag, look at the 2/3 can of beer, and realize I have unwittingly yet inescapably entered

The Taqueria Zone

Cause I can't leave with the open beer.  And I can't eat the tacos in the store.  I mull over the horns of the dilemna, and realize where I went wrong - I opened the beer.  I was supposed to not enjoy the alcoholic beverage, purchased for consumption on premise at a licensed vendor en situ, but rather anywhere else - on the curb, in the car, at Terry's bar even.

Just.
Not.
Here.

And people wonder why syndicated episodes of Seinfeld air 4x daily?

On another local online forum, the Taqueria owners wrote:

"Mentioning our little girl is exactly the class that we have come to expect from jersey city. Luckily...(actually luck has nothing to do with it) taqueria downtown is so busy and runs well enough on its own, so we can focus on taqueria LES. Can't even tell you the difference in class in the clientele in NYC than that in Jersey. So don't worry, it's just a matter of time before we close the jersey store. "

What have you to say now Taqueria apologists?

Taqueria expands to the Lower East Side
If you've ever been partying in the Lower East Side and thought, "Man I could sure go for one of Taqueria's tasty tacos right about now," Hipster Jesus has answered your prayers.

Taqueria Lower East Side
198 Orchard St.
New York, NY 10002
212-677-3910
Price range: $$ ($9-$15)

As a spinoff of Jersey City's beloved Taqueria Downtown, the owners of this homestyle Mexican spot most certainly are not into wasting time reading about Search Engine Optimization. They have to prepare their famous tacos, tamales and tortas to the hungry (drunken) LES faithful! The cantina takes over at the ill-fated Xiao Ye space and will serve margaritas (only a single flavor is available—and really, there is only one margarita flavor). Entrees include pork chops in green salsa and salt-cured flank steak. There's burritos too.

Here's a review from the NYT last year:

As Authentic as Authentic Gets
By JOHN HOLL
Published: March 11, 2007

Before you order for the first time at the Taqueria Downtown, the owners would like you to note the list of their “Ten Commandments” posted there.

The taqueria serves crema fresca or crème fraîche, not sour cream. It does not serve guacamole, and the burritos are not the size of pillows. That the restaurant does not serve fajitas is mentioned three times.

In short, if you’re a fan of chain-style Mexican fare, you probably won’t appreciate the food at Taqueria Downtown.

And there is a lot to appreciate. Eight different tacos including fish ($3), cactus ($2.50) and pork ($2), each served with cilantro, onion, salsa and lime and a slice of radish. The grilled steak quesadilla ($5.95) melts in your mouth. Tamales, flautas, enchiladas, burritos and full dinners like grilled pork chops with green salsa ($9.95) are on the menu. The taqueria has no liquor license, but customers are encouraged to bring their own.

Since opening in November 2005, the restaurant has become an instant classic. The owners, Andrea Azpeitia and Phil Barraza, who are Mexican, ran a taco truck across from City Hall before opening in a basement across the street from the Boys and Girls Club of Hudson County. The inside is reminiscent of a college dormitory, with bright yellow walls covered with magazine cutouts, album covers and holiday lights.

As funky as the décor may be, the owners are serious about the food.

“We feel like there are very, very few places where you can get authentic Mexican food that is not Americanized or Tex-Mex,” Ms. Azpeitia said. “There are restaurants who realize that Mexican food has become popular and want to profit, but they don’t do it right. And that offends us.”
