Jersey City woman tells police BMW was taken by carjackers on Heights street
By The Jersey Journal
on December 28, 2012 at 7:40 AM

A 36-year-old woman was carjacked in the Jersey City Heights after her vehicle was boxed in by two cars Wednesday afternoon, police reports said.

The Jersey City woman walked into the North District police station and said her 2011 BMW 328xi was carjacked at Leonard Street and Kennedy Boulevard at 4 p.m., police reports said.

The woman said she had just gotten into her car when a white Infiniti G35 and a black Honda truck with tinted windows boxed her from moving, reports said.

Two men got out of the Infiniti and one of them forced her door open, pulled her out and shoved her to the ground, reports said.

The man then jumped into her car, and sped away with the other cars that had blocked her path, reports said.

The three cars then fled north on Kennedy Boulevard, reports said. The victim said her iPhone, $60, and credit cards were inside her car when it was snatched, reports said.

Broad daylight.  Amazing.

A 70-year-old woman was forced from a vehicle at gunpoint Tuesday in Jersey City’s 12th carjacking of the year, according to police reports.

The 42-year-old owner of the 2010 Nissan Maxima was returning to his vehicle outside a McDonald’s restaurant on Communipaw Avenue about 10 p.m. when a man pointed a silver pistol at him and said, “You know what time it is,” police reports said.

The gunman took the man’s wallet and ordered the man’s 70-year-old mother out of the passenger seat at gunpoint, reports said.

With the car engine running, the car thief jumped in the vehicle and sped away, reports said.

The carjacker was described as being roughly 6-foot, between 28 and 30 years old, with shoulder-length dreadlocks and wearing a gray-hooded sweatshirt and a black baseball cap, reports said.

Anyone with information on the carjacking is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.

Though I'm glad the JJ is on top of it, sometimes their coverage leaves a bit to be desired. Here's a stellar article:

"Here are all the things you need to watch out for when trying to avoid being carjacked. Oh, yeah, they don't do that here, by the way--here they just point a gun at your face! Good luck, JC!"

With number of carjackings soaring, Hudson County and Jersey City expand task force to target perpetrators
Published: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 3:03 AM
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

A rise in the number of reported carjackings has triggered formation of a task force comprised of Jersey City police and members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, officials said yesterday, noting the crime has proven fatal in two cases in recent months.

“We have had a task force in existence in Jersey City, and we are expanding it,” said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio, adding that uniformed units and plainclothes detectives will operate “simultaneously at various areas in Jersey City and beyond.” The task force is designed to be both proactive and reactive, he said, declining to give specifics on the size of the task force or its methods of operation.

Twenty-five carjackings have been reported in Jersey City in the past six months, compared with only 17 during this same stretch a year ago, police said. Since Christmas, there has been 11 carjackings in Jersey City, the prosecutor said. As recently as Sunday night, a man driving a 2008 BMW on Oakland Avenue was ordered out of his car at gunpoint and told to leave his cellphone in the vehicle, DeFazio said.

Beyond losing their vehicles, some carjack victims have lost their lives. At about 3:25 a.m. last July 12, Jose Pazmino, 52, of Brooklyn, was fatally shot through the window of his BMW during a carjacking in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot at Tonnelle and Manhattan avenues in Jersey City, officials said. He was making a stop as he headed home from his job in Carlstadt.”

”And on May 26, U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Anthony Adams was in his 2002 Ford Explorer on Bidwell Avenue in Jersey City when he was shot once in the chest and once in the left ear during a carjacking, officials said. Earl Austin, 20, of Bartholdi Avenue, has been charged in the murder, officials said, noting he has gang tattoos.

In late January, Latoya Campbell, 20, was convicted of a brutal carjacking that occurred at the Newport Centre Mall in Downtown Jersey City in 2009 in which a woman was beaten and robbed. Campbell was not present when the verdict was read. She had told officials she was sick and had gone to the hospital. Campbell was not in the hospital and she had to be tracked down, officials said. She was additionally charged with jumping her $100,000 bail, reports said, adding she is also charged with a drug offense. Campbell faces 10 to 30 when she is sentenced Thursday by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Patrick Arre.

Mostly high-end vehicles are being targeted, but DeFazio said that is not true in all cases. Carjacked vehicles are sometimes shipped out of the country, but they often wind up in chop shops, where they are disassembled and sold for parts, officials said.

So basically his car was right outside the Pavonia PATH at around 8:30PM, some thug is hanging around, blind commuters (not literally, just heads down don't see nothing) headed home, lots of foot traffic to/from the mall, and said thug pops on a ski mask and jacks a M-B?  Seems like he shows little/no fear of being confronted by either the PA or JCPDs, much less an armed citizen. (emphasis added)

But crime is down, the city is taking steps to make us feel safer, Healy said so, from his perch at his son's bar last night at 11:30 pm . . . Oh, that's right, he has an armed escort, of course he feels safe.

An armed citizen‽  In NJ‽

Jersey City carjacker lets victim keep his dog, reports say

John Heinis/The Jersey Journal

A masked carjacker robbed a 2012 Mercedes-Benz at gunpoint Monday night in Jersey City, police said.

But when the victim asked for his dog, which was in the front seat, the carjacker gave him his pooch, reports said.

The vehicle's owner, a 50-year-old city resident, said he was in his vehicle at Pavonia Avenue and Washington Boulevard at 8:40 p.m. when a man wearing a ski mask approached the SUV wielding a handgun, reports said.

The car robber barked "Get the (expletive) out of the car or I'll shoot you," the victim told cops. The victim said that when he opened his car door, the carjacker grabbed him and pushed him to the pavement, reports said.

The victim then pleaded for the robber not to shoot him and to let him have his dog, which was seated in the front seat. The carjacker then handed the man the dog, according to police reports. The carjacker drove away in the vehicle and the victim refused medical attention at the scene, reports said.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about this incident should contact the Jersey City Detective Bureau at (201) 547-JAIL.

The carjacker is described as being about 40 years old, standing 5-foot-5 and weighing about 200 pounds, reports said.

He wore a black vest over a black hooded sweatshirt, a black baseball cap, sunglasses, and green sweatsuit-type pants with a white stripe, reports said.

OK, what was his race?

Here's Dennis Quaid.  He's 5'5" and (supposedly) 200#, and probably around 40 years old in this picture.  Did he carjack them?

JERSEY CITY — Three men were victims of a gunpoint carjacking in Downtown Jersey City Tuesday and police later located the 2007 Dodge Charger a short distance away, officials said.

Officers responding to Third and Brunswick streets at about 3 p.m. spoke to the 23-year-old driver, who said he and two other men were seated in the parked car when a man got into the back seat.

The man took out a gun and said: “You know what it is,” reports said, adding that the car’s occupants jumped out. The carjacker climbed into the front seat and drove away with the victims chasing on foot, reports said.

The carjacker turned onto Brunswick and then onto First Street and the victims lost sight of the car on Coles Street, reports said, adding that the Charger was recovered at Coles and Columbus Drive a short time later.

Jersey City man tells police armed carjacker took his BMW when he arrived home
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
March 23, 2010, 5:30AM

A Jersey City man was carjacked at gunpoint in the early morning hours Monday by a man who got into his BMW in the Lafayette section and put a gun to his forehead, officials said.

Police responded to the home of the 30-year-old Prescott Street man who said he was pulling into his driveway at 12:25 a.m. when a man opened the driver's side door and pointed a handgun at him, reports said. The gunman took the man's cell phones, struck him on the head and pushed him out of the way before driving away in the BMW, reports said.

The victim initially ran after his car, but gave up the chase and reported the theft to the West District Police Station, where he received treatment from EMTs, reports said. The victim told police he saw a four-door Honda Civic trailing his car.

Alot of these carjackers are coming from outside the area. That last one has Camden/Philly written all over it, which doesn't make any sense logistically, but who said carjackers were smartest. Definitely keeping an extra eye out.

Two men carjacked a new Nissan and pistol-whipped its 49-year-old driver yesterday afternoon in Jersey City, police reports said.

Jersey City Police were called to an apartment building on Garrison Avenue near Sip Avenue at 1:36 p.m. on the report of a carjacking of a black 2010 Nissan Maxima from outside a house on Garrison Avenue, reports said.

Witnesses said that two men walked up to the 49-year-old man, a Nutley resident, pistol-whipped him and drove away west on Sip Avenue, reports said. Police declined to say why the Nutley man was at Garrison Avenue. A witness told police he leapt into a car with the driver and together followed the Nissan to Route 1 & 9, reports said. The stolen car was last seen pulling out of a gas station in the southbound lane of the highway, reports said.

An attendant at the gas station told the witness that the carjackers had asked him for directions to Route 1 & 9, evidently unaware that they were already on the highway, police said.

The suspects were described as thin men, one more than 6-feet tall, wearing a black leather jacket, sporting a chin-beard, and armed with a handgun. The second was described at shorter, also sporting a chin beard.

The victim was taken to Christ Hospital for treatment of a gash to his mouth and bruises to the right side of face and head, reports said.

Anyone with information should call the Jersey City Police Department tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.

Two 17-year-old Newark teens who carjacked a woman's vehicle at the Newport Centre Mall in Jersey City Sunday were nabbed later at a nearby mall, police said.

Police were called to the Newport Centre Mall at 30 Mall Drive West Sunday evening on the report of a carjacking.

A 34-year-old Cator Avenue resident told police she parked her 2008 Scion at 4:15 p.m. on the second floor of the parking garage when she was confronted by two girls who said they had locked their keys in their car.

She told them to contact security, but they followed her into Macy's Department store arguing with her.

As the lady was getting back into her car to leave the store at 5:30 p.m., the two girls ambushed her, reports said.

They punched the victim in the face, grabbed her car keys, shoved her out the driver's seat and drove off with the victim's purse still in the car, reports said
