gotta interject with my own experience with Accomplished, based on thebes' recommendations of high praise on JCList. Never met a more belligerent contractor in my life, and all over the audacious request for a written estimate. The guy who came to the house, who had been very sweet and friendly up until that point, got nasty, as did his supervisor at the office, who i called afterward. If you're fond of being cursed at for asking for a written estimate before having major work performed, these are the guys for you.

We had Capitol come out to give us an estimate on replacing a small flat roof, and to take a look at our gutters. Still waiting on the estimate, but the guy was very nice to deal with, and they were where they said they'd be, when they said they'd be there. Sort of surprised on the delay in getting the estimate, but still holding out, based on the high praise from fasteddie and others.

I had a bad experience with Accomplished as well in getting an estimate.  I don't recommend working with them.
I did have a good experience with Capitol and we're going with them.  I'll let you know how the work is after they're done, but so far we're in the middle of completely replacing the roof and we're impressed with them so far!

We just had Capitol do the work on our flat roof.  The total cost for a teardown, cutouts for two skylights, an aluminum gutter in the back and replacement of rotted wood came to around 12000. The price was reasonable considering the scope of the job; the work was excellent and they were a pleasure to deal with.  The owner was on site nearly the entire time and his wife, who ran the phones and did the billing, was incredibly responsive to returning my calls.  Overall,   I am quite happy that I went to them for the work and I recommend them highly.  One thing, if you are looking to have skylights put in I would recommend using Superior Tinsmith in Brooklyn.  Their prices were nearly half the cost of other skylight manufacturers.  They can manufacture  the old style "sky lanterns"  (copper or galvanized) in under a week but you have to pick them up yourself.

My vote is for Accomplished because they stuck with us through all of our leaking problems. We had multiple leak issues that are finally gone. Accomplished, once paid, does not disappear... they even came out once at 3 am and continued to work with us 7 months after they finished the roof to make sure the leaks were gone.

Leaky houses are a pain in the ass!!! I'm never moving now that this problem is finally solved. My advice is to ask around and find out the companies record for responding to emergency calls after they have been paid in full.

Like cyclotronic  posted, "you get what you pay for". We originally went the cheap route, which turned into the even more expensive route.

We are also in need of having our entire roof torn off and replaced.  Our estimates from Capitol came in close to 11,000, and that's for a flat roof (1800 sq feet) two new cutouts for skylights, and a new gutter for the back of the house.  We are still waiting for them to do the work, so I can't comment on quality although I can say that as of now, the owner's wife has been very responsive.  She always calls me back in a timely fashion.  I will report back here once we finally have the work done.

Jpeace and I used Simpson Brothers.  On jclist I have many posts about them. By all means get a quote from Pete Simpson. The did a very thorough job, very pleased with their work. Capitol is also very good.

Bower's probably the greatest contractor I've ever worked with, but also among the most expensive.  But you get what you pay for.  They did a huge 3 week job for me last year with lots of high-end custom work, and are working right now on phase 2 of the project, and I'm really pleased with their work again.  This 2nd project includes some siding (wood shingles) and it's coming out so good I wish I could afford to pay them to re-do the siding on the whole house.  If your job is all or mostly flat roofs, I've say go with Capitol, but for high quality asphalt shingles / slate / tile / copper / etc, Bower is the best in the area.  If you want to see their work, send me a PM.

Woodsy, I just had our old roof torn off and replaced late last year.  We shopped around gettig quotes from Capitol roofing, Bayonne Roofing, All-State roofing and finally, believe it or not, American Home Remodeller's group who we found through shopping at BJ's.  Go figure....

We actually have 2 roofs on our house, a pitched one and a flat-one, estimates we gathered quoted everything from $10,000 to $16,000, at that point we decided that we didn't think we could afford to do both at once, and as the flat roof was reasonably new (replaced in 2000) we decided to do the pitched roof only.  A job coming in around $7,000.

Anyhow.... we went with American Home Remodelling on the strength of their warranty more than anything else.  All roofing companies will tell you that the shingles are covered by warranty for 20 or 30 years but what they don't tell you is that is once they nail those shingles up , if you have warranty issues, you will be talking to the shingle manufacturer and not not the roofin co.  In other words you will be getting a buncha replacement shingles in the post that you will have to find another contractor to put up.

American Home remodelling sell themselves on the fact that they give a warranty on their labor as well as the shingle warranty so if anything goes wrong they will come back and fix it.  As nothing has gone wrong with the roof so far I haven't had to test this though.

Also I got lucky but I am not gonna post that here, PM me if you want to hear the rest of the story or I'll tell you in the sb....

Well it's time to bite the bullet and have our roof replaced.  One of our contractor friends recommended Arco Roofing (http://www.arcoroof.com/).  Does anyone have any experience with this company, good or bad?  Or any other recommendations? I've already spoken with people from Capitol and Bower & Co.

I know it's going to cost a shit load of money (we have to do a tear off) but I just don't want to be going :homer: after it's all said and done.
