I totally forgot about Wonder Bagels, which is strange since I've been eating there a ton lately.  They actually make pretty damn good home fries to go with their breakfast platters, which are also pretty cheap in addition to being good.

The Brownstone Diner and Madame Claude were my two favorite breakfast places to eat in JC. I also liked the Dominic Santana owned Hardgrove where i could get a sausage/bacon/egg/cheese sandwich on a cuban roll, coffee and side of yellow rice for about 7 bucks.

I go to El Sazon de Las Americas at the corner of Grove & Wayne more than any other spot: $4 for fried Domincan salami, eggs, and potatoes.  Also, their greasy empanadas are good for hangovers.

If anything, I prefer the atmosphere over the joints my cracker ass probably belongs in  ;D

Yeah, I never had this problem eating there either...but even when I went in that day the placed reaked of mothballs. I am curious as to why...
I guess I will go back but I just want to make sure the place has been cleared of all moths or balls.

I can't believe I am going to report this, BUT the last time I ate at 2nd Street Bakery I ordered a couple sandwiches and some stuffed bread to-go and everything tasted like moth balls (no joke). Now I can not go back... :'(

For a classic standard Jersey diner breakfast, I like Flamingo.  I like it better than Brownstone, which I've found to be inconsistent, expensive, and too damn crowded (go figure.)  Of course, 2nd Street Bakery can't be beat for Italian egg sandwiches to go.   Their Pepper and Egg will change your life.

Very strange.  I've never had this issue and TRUST ME I eat there quite a lot.

Hate the Flamingo. Hate the Brownstone like poison.

How the hell can a place that calls itself a dinner not serve a Monte Cristo? Or even know what one is?

I prefer Wonder Bagels. They have a great Porkroll-egg-n-cheese sandwich, along with other good egg-type breakfast dishes, and their coffee is always serviceable. Otherwise, downtown doesn't have much to offer if you're not looking for something ritzy.

If you are, Marco and Pepe has a damn fine Ham n Eggs that makes me practically cream myself whenever I taste it. And the staff never gives me a dirty look when I ask them to put a little Jameson in my coffee. I've heard good things about Ox's brunch, but the price is just a bit too much.
Madame Claude is good, and not nearly as expensive as the Ox/Skinner's/Marco & Pepe crowd, but still a little pricey.

Oh, finally, Taqueria has a very good Huevos Rancheros, and in the winter they have excellent, spicy hot chocolate. But if you're looking for American-style gigundo-breakfast, their portions might leave you a bit unsated.
A particularly Jersey malaise—the inextinguishable longing for elsewheres.

Anyone want to share their favorite breakfast joint? No need to be a fancy joint (actually I'd prefer a hole in the wall with good food and good coffee).  I've enjoyed Cafe Nia a few times, and although I've never been there I have heard good things about Madam Claude.  Anyone care to share their favorite spot?
