In terms of quality of meat cut: Canadian bacon (aka back bacon/Irish Bacon) > Taylor Ham (aka Pork Roll/mystery meat/pork sausage) > American bacon (aka streaky bacon/fried pig fat).

For me the Merchant's "Full Irish Breakfast & More" is the best breakfast in the City...if only they opened earlier than 11am.

I was at the Merchant last Sunday for brunch and of course I had the Irish bacon.  So good I could just sit around ordering it all afternoon long :yum:

For a classic standard Jersey diner breakfast, I like Flamingo.  I like it better than Brownstone, which I've found to be inconsistent, expensive, and too damn crowded (go figure.)  Of course, 2nd Street Bakery can't be beat for Italian egg sandwiches to go.   Their Pepper and Egg will change your life.

El goodo is the money on both! Even with new owners at Flamingo, it's still one of the best breakfast joints around.

NJ's Pork Roll / Taylor Ham Divide
NJ's Pork Roll / Taylor Ham Divide

New Jersey produces a pork-based mystery meat product that isn't well known outside of the tri-state region. Some folks call it Pork Roll, some call it Taylor Ham.

This map documents the Pork Roll / Taylor Ham divide in NJ -- research was culled from WFMU's Twitter feed.

Feel free to add in your own location (within NJ) and be sure to specify whether you call it Pork Roll (blue) or Taylor Ham (pink).

But are there any other brands? I haven't seen any. We always called it Taylor Ham up in North Jersey.

At Sam's Club (Secaucus) last weekend, I saw this...

By pork roll I assume you are referring to Taylor Ham? (pork roll is what people in PA call it)

Those of us from central Jersey also call it pork roll. Taylor Ham is a brand name, hence the capitalization.

No way.  Central Jersey born and raised (and so were my parents) and we call it pork roll.

But let me ask you this....Does Taylor Ham or pork roll have an 80s movie named after it???

No, but to be fair, that is an awful awful movie.

Wonder Bagels is good too.  If only they had canadian bacon!   But they have a crap load of cream cheeses so if I'm feeling simple and just want a bagel with cream cheese - Wonder Bagels it is.

Instead they have something heads and shoulders betters then canadian bacon (is that capitalized btw?) and that is pork roll. The perfect breakfast meat.

Canadian Bacon apparently is capitalized.  According to wikipedia, "The term Canadian Bacon or Canadian-style bacon means back bacon,[5] but this term refers usually to the lean ovoid portion.[3] This should not be confused with the round, sliced, smoked ham product called "Canadian Bacon" in much of the United States"

But let me ask you this....Does Taylor Ham or pork roll have an 80s movie named after it???

Brownstone makes a breakfast sandwich for under $5.  I'm a fan of canadian bacon and not many places carry it, so I'm all about the Brownstone.  Oh and of course there are also pancakes...waffles...french toast.

3:15 am though...you can't really blame that on Al's, unfortunately.  By that logic, would you stop walking past the bodega on 7th and Coles?  Just sayin.

GIANT 'KILLER'
Surrenders in diner murder 3 more face arrest: officials
Wednesday, December 12, 2007
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Hudson County homicide detectives have charged a man in the brutal murder of a Jersey City man who was beaten to death outside a Jersey City diner last week.

Isiah Williams, 29, a mountain of a man at 6-foot-6 and well over 200 pounds, was arrested in the early morning hours Monday. Investigators did not release the information until yesterday because the investigation is ongoing, said Hudson County First Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory.

Williams, of Bergen Avenue in Jersey City, is charged with murdering Marcus Richey, 22, who was viciously assaulted outside Al's Diner on Communipaw Avenue on Dec. 2 at about 3:15 a.m., officials said.

Richey died two days later as a result of head and neck trauma when he was taken off life support at University Hospital in Newark, officials said.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said investigators anticipate more arrests.

"We believe at least three people had some involvement with the beating," DeFazio said yesterday. "They all face felony murder charges, regardless of whether they delivered the blunt force trauma or not."

Investigators asked Williams to come to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad headquarters at the foot of Duncan Avenue in Jersey City and he was arrested upon arrival, officials said.

The Prosecutor's Office would not say what led them to Williams, who is being held at Hudson County jail in Kearny on $500,000 bail.

Before the attack, Richey and a friend got into an argument with a group of at least three men inside the diner, which is located near Belvidere Avenue, officials said, adding that when Richey and his friend left, the group attacked them.

The friend was punched in the back of the head and knocked out, while Richey was beaten more severely, DeFazio said. The prosecutor said the friend has since recovered.

Richey's mother, Aurella Richey, who lives in Greenville, said her son worked at Teterboro Airport. She said he attended local parochial schools and was taking college courses in engineering. On days off, and sometimes before work, he ministered to youth classes at his old school, she said.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the homicide squad at (201) 915-1345.

Found ourselves in da Heights yesterday and want to give a shout out to Rhumba Cafe on Central Ave.  Big fry up for $4.00, how can you beat that.  Also, although it technically isn't Jersey City, the Coach House on JFK is by far my favorite local diner.

Al's Diner on Communipaw

or

Taste of the Caribbean on Communipaw @ West Side Ave. They serve Doubles . Which cost 1.25.
Very good, make sure you get pepper and tamarind sauce on them. But not too much pepper if you can't stand the heat.

Never had a bad breakfast at Al's... their omelets are awesome, the Tasso Lasso (something like that) is to die for and soooooo not on my diet. The wait staff rocks on weekend mornings, and the food comes out quickly. I've never had to ask for my java cup to be re-filled.

I like the little deli on Newark and Grove, catty-corner from the PATH stop.  Damn me if I can remember the name or if they even have a sign up though.  You can get an egg on a roll or bagel with cheese and bacon for a few bucks, but their coffee is the best I've tried in the city.  It blows Dunkin Donuts out of the water.  If I felt comfortable carrying a scalding hot cup of liquid onto a packed commuter train I'd stop by there every morning.

got lunch there today - no mothballery whatsoever.

Yeah, I never had this problem eating there either...but even when I went in that day the placed reaked of mothballs. I am curious as to why...
I guess I will go back but I just want to make sure the place has been cleared of all moths or balls.

I can't believe I am going to report this, BUT the last time I ate at 2nd Street Bakery I ordered a couple sandwiches and some stuffed bread to-go and everything tasted like moth balls (no joke). Now I can not go back... :'(

Very strange.  I've never had this issue and TRUST ME I eat there quite a lot.

Breakfast should cost no more than $3 and that's on the high end. If you are paying more you are a fancy boy or a kept woman.

I guess considering I cook my own that makes me a cheap bastard. ;D
