Moloney's in Jersey City now a destination for corned beef

Covered in shamrocks and green decor, Moloney's Meat Market in Jersey City dished up over 300 corned beef sandwiches yesterday - a St. Patrick's Day tradition that stretches back four generations at the family-owned establishment.

The Newark Avenue meat store had its six employees prepped and ready to go by 11 a.m. yesterday and served up sandwiches until 2 p.m., said Tom Moloney, owner of the market that opened in 1875. "We're an Irish butcher shop with the best corned beef around," Moloney, 56, boasted.

The secret to Moloney's corned beef is that it comes barreled, not packaged, and the "Moloney trim" makes it "nice and lean," he said. This year, he boiled 1,000 pounds of meat for four or five hours, he said.

"People come from all the country for it," said Danny Stone, employee for 29 years. "They move away from the area and make visits back for the food. It's unbelievable."

Appreciating one of the $6 sandwiches yesterday, David Gabriel, an employee of Universal Printing around the corner, said he goes to Moloney's "at least four times a week."

Jersey City resident Tom Vittas, the owner of nearby Vitta's Shoe Store, has been chowing down at Moloney's "almost every day" for 52 years. "The meat is great, and the prices are good, too," Vittas said.

I'm a pretty big fan of the meat from Moloney's toward McGinley Square. Up Newark toward the Courthouse. They've been in business forever, and for good reason.

oh indeed - I buy MEAT form hi-turnover big box store and trim it up.

I cover a cadaver-sized table with contactor paper and them parchment. the body parts- er, the MEAT I BOUGHT goes in the freezer for a coupla hours. A really sharp knife and voila - i re-pack in foil and ZIP-LOCK body parts bags - meal sized portions. Then I burn my clothes and shower and clean the tub with bleach.

Stew Leonards in NY/CT will peel and butcher filets to your desired specifications. And the Italian guys on Park & 10th in Homophoboken deliver to my friends' on VVP.

To add on to Skwirrl's comment about BJ's. If you have some decent cutlery, and knife skills, you can make a couple hundred bucks worth of filet mignons and beef tenderloin roasts from subprimal cuts that you can buy there in wetpack for 70 - 100 dollars. I have yet to try and do the same with strip or rib-eyes but I suppose if one of you has an old band saw you don't mind getting a little bloody, we could try it.

Also a decent place to buy pork ribs in bulk.

As craige pointed out a few weeks ago AtS, Fresh Direct is decidedly anti-union, and therefore, as much as it pains me to say this, I can no longer patronize them; at least not until they change their politics.

I will, however, suggest Maloney's, which is in the JSQ area, on Newark near the courthouse.

BJ's can have decent meats at times. tends to be luck of the draw, but you can get relatively well marbled choice strip steaks at times. not a bad place for pork products either.

if i want to go prime, i'll order Lobel's for delivery. you pay up, but their strip steaks are as good or better than any i've had at sparks or strip house.

Suspecting some of you were expecting something more obscene and perverted, I will be disappointing you.

I have been purchasing my meets at Shop Rite for years. While the chicken and turkey tend to be prefectly fine, I'm hoping to procure more prime beefs.

Are any of you aware of a good butcher not too far away you could recommend?

I misspoke. But whatever, you take that PATH to the butcher, hence the extra $3.

I would assume that he takes the PATH to Hoboken. $1.50 each way.
Get a trip card $1.20 each way or a $10+ Metro Card $1.25 each way.
