I hope you separated and saved the bottles, they are valuable historical artifacts.  Sandy kicked up a tonnne of old ordnance from Ft Hancock, the old US Army Proving Ground for artillery, about a 15 mile swim to the south at Sandy Hook.

I don't know what this was.  It used to be sherical and it had a liquid inside.  Since it didn't leak it may not have been water.


Light load this year.  It was alot cleaner than usual.

Any further recommendations for clothing?  This looks to be wet work.

Some people never get more than 10 feet from the gate and spend the whole time picking up plastic bottle caps and tampon applicators.  If that's your thing then you won't get wet at all and many people don't get wet.  I go for the big stuff and I'm usually muddy/wet within the first 10 minutes.  I usually regret not wearing some type of waterproof footwear.  Hip waders would be overkill but be prepared for situations like trying to lift a tire and instead of the tire coming up, you sink down in the mud. 

It gets cold on the water so I wear an old winter jacket which too much when I'm working but I freeze without it when I slow down. 

Much of the stuff in that pic behind the statue is still there because it's partially buried and can't be removed easily.  A sharp cutting tool and shovel would probably come in handy.  They usually have wheelbarrows available.

Wet work requires a K-Bar. This is muddy, Wellies or Leon L. Bean's Maine Hunting Boots and moleskin trousers are de riguer, if you have a a green peace sign button you should wear it. Gloves, too, deerskin or heavy canvas, leave those fawn colored elbow length debutante slicks at home.

Volunteers Needed for Liberty State Park Salt Marsh Cleanup This Weekend

After a long winter, the Friends of Liberty State Park is looking for volunteers to help clean up the salt marsh natural area in the park this Saturday.

The 16th annual cleanup is scheduled for 9 am to noon on Saturday, and includes drinks and snacks.

The salt marsh area is located near the south end of the park, across from the administration building and visitor center, off Pesin Drive. The area accumulates “assorted, sometimes interesting, minor debris” that comes in with the tides, according to Friends of Liberty State Park president Sam Pesin, who calls the cleanup “a good and dirty worthy deed.”

Sturdy shoes are suggested; for more information contact Pesin at pesinliberty (at) earthlink.net.

The only things they provide are bags, a dumpster and some sammiches but I generally leave the food behind for the older folk that turn up.  If you saw some of the things that people drag out of the marsh you'd probably change your mind about fishing in the area.  I personally try to haul in at least one tire per year in addition to about a half dozen bags of flotsam and jetsam.  It's getting harder to find tires you don't have to dig out.  Every now and then a whitewall turns up, like from the '50s.

I tell ya, this is more fun than it sounds.  This Sat., 11AM behind the Statue Of Liberty.

Yep.  I'll be there.  Even if it's for just one bag of trash, come on down.  Let wifey and offspring marvel at JC's view of the ass end of The Statue Of Liberty while you work.

It's a mixture of stuff that rolled in with the tide, stuff that was dumped after the choo choos went bye bye and some industrial junk, probably from the railroads.  I'd be thrilled if I found something from the Black Tom Explosion but after 90+ years of the tide rolling in and out, I'm not expecting anything.

To be honest, I didn't find anything good last year so it is really all about cleaning up the park.
