We went to this festival on Sunday and I have to say that the RR terminal is a really nice place to have an event.  The stuff that was on sale was a mixed bag, some nice photography pieces (if you like photos of urban decay as much as I do) , some interesting paintings, and some god-awful 3-D Obama images that looked like they had been purchased at the 99 cent store and were being resold to the taste deprived.  One actually depicted him as if the rising sun was coming out of his arse.  Whilst I like Obama, I am not prepared to go that far into the dungeons of bad taste.

My favorite guy was the dude selling t-shirts that said things like "The only solution is a revolution" and "Stop Mental Slavery".  I almost bought the second one but it seemed that I would be contradicting the message if I wore it so I didn't bother.

It was definitely a cool event and I would love to see more things in this space.  I didn't stick around to watch the bands as we had tramped across the city to NJCU and the Festival of the Andes which was smaller but much more interesting.

After my kid had recovered from her disappointment that this was not the "Festival of the Candies" she had been expecting, me and her shared our first ever arepa (I am now hooked on these things) and listened to the live pan pipes blasting through a Marshall amp.  I had no idea that Jim Marshall made it to the Andes but it didn't stop it from being fun. This festival is all about the live music, dancing and food and is highly recommended for next year.
"god hates you. you will all go to yuppie hell. in yuppie hell there is no starbucks or hole foods or sushi bar. in yuppie hell you will work 16 hours a day in a bodega. in yuppie hell your car will not start when the sweeper is coming down the street. in yuppie hell your doorman will terrorize you and have sex with your wife or husband...when you are at work....in the bodega. in yuppie hell you will go to the laundromat and lose your last quarter in a broken washing machine. in yuppie hell you will buy all your food and clothing at the 99 cent store. in yuppie hell there are no cell phones, you will use a pay phone. a filthy pay phone".      -   Cat_Man Dude

BUMP! Great day for a festival!

Dear Friend:

On behalf of Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, the Division of Cultural Affairs cordially invites you to participate in Jersey City’s 35th  Annual Cultural Arts Festival.  The festival is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 7, 2009 from 1:00 pm to 7:00pm at Liberty State Park in the Central Railroad Terminal.

Jersey City’s Annual Cultural Arts Festival is recognized as one of New Jersey’s premier cultural events!  The festival showcases hundreds of the region’s most talented professional artists, craftspeople and performers in addition to offering a wide variety of ethnic foods and fun for the entire family.

The event features dozens of local artists and artisans, ethnic fare, live entertainment and children’s activities.  A variety of visual artists and craft makers will display their work, including paintings by Stephanie Riggi and Bojana Coklyat; photography by Jesse Lee, Rebecca Ferrier; ceramics by Tina Maneca; hats by Uta Brauser; handmade soaps and fragrances by Gloria Chapa; and jewelry by Leah Siegel-Picus.

Musical performances at this year’s Cultural Arts Festival will include: Tom Parisi will host the karaoke contest; The Bobby Blue Band, for the jazz and blue fans; The 3D Band will bring an infectious blend of island rhythms, salsa, gospel, R&B, contemporary jazz and soul; and DJ Omar Matthews will also be on hand to perform a great mixture of DJ music.

Attendees to this year’s Cultural Arts Festival can also expect a taste of different ethnic foods such as Filipino, Indian, Greek, soul food, Italian, Spanish and a variety of pastries.

There will also be a number of activities, including art and eco-friendly activities for children. Marco Beria will conduct an activity in which participants construct arts and crafts based on ecological themes using recyclable items. The arts and crafts include creating mobiles, bird houses, and musical instruments.

A clown will perform magic acts that involve audience participation, and a storyteller will perform a puppet show. Four different cartoon characters (Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Dora the Explorer and Blue's Clues) will entertain children. Caricature artists will also be on hand to create paintings for the young and young-at-heart.  Plus there will be a Moon Bounce for kids in the rear of the terminal.
