On Friday, June 22, the East Coast Greenway Alliance held a grand opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Lincoln Park in Jersey City to celebrate the bridging of the greenway gap between Jersey City and Newark.

The gap closure now means that cyclists and pedestrians of Essex and Hudson counties will be able to ride and walk more effectively and certainly much more safely.

The new addition runs from Lincoln Park in Jersey City, along Routes 1 & 9, and ending at Raymond Boulevard in Newark.

This link also allows East Coast Greenway users to connect to its sister trails, the Liberty Water Gap and the September 11th Memorial Trail.

The ceremony was at the southwest edge of Lincoln Park at 11:00 am.  Key speakers included NJDOT Commissioner Simpson, who helped with seeing this project through.

Light refreshments were served, and the ceremony was followed by an inaugural bike ride with the ECG Cabot Tour cyclists, who are riding from Miami to Maine to promote the East Coast Greenway.

For more information on the East Coast Greenway and the new link, contact ECG Mid-Atlantic Coordinator Andy Hamilton at andy@greenway.org or 267-236-3407.

Talk about a hike. From the Independent:

‘The Big Walk’ Coming Through Jersey City Next Weekend
By Jon Whiten • May 12th, 2010

On Sunday, May 23, a group of about 100 people are expected to make their way on foot through Jersey City as part of a 50-mile walk along the East Coast Greenway, from Metropark station in Iselin to NYC’s Penn Station. “The Big Walk,” as it has been dubbed, is designed to build awareness of health and fitness, alternative transportation options, and the Greenway, the proposed nearly 3,000-mile bicycle and pedestrian route stretching from Maine to Florida.

[snip]

The walk begins at 5 am at Metropark Station, and is expected to come through Jersey City — from Lincoln Park to Exchange Place — in the late afternoon (between 5:30 and 7:30 pm). There’s no charge for the walk, and registration is currently open on the web: http://nj2ny50.org/
