Bon Chon BonChon Jersey City is a JOKE!!!

Today was my third time having BonChon in Jersey City. The first time was decent- chicken pieces were microscopic to say the least; nothing like BonChon on 33rd St. in NYC!

The second time we placed an order for pick-up only to argue with the woman on how to spell my name. When we picked up the order it was all drumsticks, when we ordered wings!?!?!

Now this 3rd time - they say come in 10 minutes- I come in 15 and my order was not ready - 2 people came in and placed orders- they were in and out! probably got my order!!!

They offered me radishes or a can of soda for my inconvenience- BONCHON you know what you can do with that can of soda and side of radishes!!!

Save yourself the heartache!! NOT WORTH IT!! Save your money!

Fried chicken, Korean style, comes to Jersey City

Fried chicken, Korean style, comes to Jersey City
Published: Thursday, October 21, 2010, 9:15 AM
Amy Sara Clark/The Jersey Journal

While Jersey Cityites are still mourning the death of Atomic Wings, the Jersey City restaurant that closed in August, some have welcomed the eatery's replacement, BonChon Chicken, with open arms (and mouths).

The Korean franchise, located at 172 Newark Ave., opened October 1st, and owner Harold Kim, said business is surprisingly good. He expected to get about 100 customers a day, he said, but instead he's been getting between 150 and 200 a day, he said.

Kim, 60, decided to open the store in Jersey City after realizing that many of the customers at his Fort Lee store were driving up from Jersey City for the chicken. "People say they're addicted," said store spokeswoman Soie Ju.

Understandable. While the menu is primarily fried chicken wings, drumsticks (you get to choose which, unlike most wing places) or chicken breast strips, the difference is the flavoring -- and the crunch.

The "hot and spicy" and "soy garlic" sauces come from Korea, said Kim, and the exact ingredients are a company secret. "I don't even know what's in it," he said, chuckling.

The crunch comes from frying the cage-free chicken twice, with a 10-minute pause in between to let the oil drain off. That allows for the extra crunch while keeping the inside moist, said Ju. The spare menu also includes such offerings as dumplings, Caesar or Asian Chicken Salad, a Korean Barbecue wrap and kimchee coleslaw.

Ju said that while about a third of the clientele in Fort Lee is Asian, only about 5 percent is in Jersey City.

The Jersey City store is BonChon's 14th location in the United States. Besides the Fort Lee store, there are also four restaurnats in Manhattan as well as stores in Northvale, Leonia, Bayside, Queens, Staten Island, Cambridge, Mass., Annandale, Vir., Los Angeles and Nanuet, N.Y., Ju said.

The franchise was started eight years in South Korea, where there are now 25 locations. It came to the United States in 2006.

Kim, who lives in Englewood Cliffs, has owned the Fort Lee store for four years. Before that he had a business importing Korean wine, he said.

BonChon Chicken, 172 Newark Ave., (201) 985-1212, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Delivery is available to downtown Jersey City, Journal Square, Newport and Hoboken with a $15 minimum.

fixed it for ya!  ;)
I'm pretty sure MCA speaks Asian Celestial too, which should be helpful.

Bring MCA along next time. I bet you will get better service. He is the ruler of Harmisus Cove.

I returned again last night to give them another go.
the food was once again delicious and they seemed better organized than when I stopped by on Sunday but once again they screwed up my order.  The got the size correct but screwed up the flavor of chicken and the chicken pieces making it up.
They get one more chance before I come behind the counter and do it myself.  >:(

Darna: could someone please splain to me why a person in a gang is called a gangbanger but a gangbang has nothing to do with gang activity?

One time, I hired a monkey to take notes for me in class. I would just sit back with my mind completely blank while the monkey scribbled on little pieces of paper. At the end of the week, the teacher said, "Class, I want you to write a paper using your notes." So I wrote a paper that said, "Hello! My name is Bingo! I like to climb on things! Can I have a banana? Eek, eek!"

Went back last night about 6PM. Drumsticks were gone (which I guess is a good thing as it implies much business but I hope they accommodate to the demand), so I opted for the breasts, plus shrimp dumplings (both with soy/garlic sauce) and sides of kimchi cole slaw and pickled radish.

The white meat was ok, but not nearly as tasty as the drumsticks. Dumpling ok too but nothing too special. I enjoyed both sides though I imagine they might be an acquired taste for non-Koreans.

Order took less than 15 minutes to fill, no problem there.

Went last night. A couple of notes/opinions:

- Took 30 minutes to get my order. I suggest ordering in advance.
- The wings were very crispy but there wasn't much chicken inside. I think mine were just overdone. it was like the turkey on National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.
- I wish the wings had a bit more sauce. I like sloppy saucy Buffalo style wings. I know that's not their thing and that they are just supposed to have a nice glaze, but I think there could have been a bit more glaze. Again, probably just not a great batch.
- At $1 a wing, I can't say last night's trip was worth it. I'll try it again after a little while.
- The dumplings were really good. You can get them glazed with the hot & spicy glaze or the soy garlic glaze if you want.

Got the 5-drumstick deal yesterday, soy and garlic--soooo good! Light, extremely crunchy skin, no grease, very moist but fully cooked meat. At $10, yes, a little on the pricey side but entirely worth it, imho.

holy cow is this stuff good, tried the Hot & Spicy and found it to be delicious but not too spicy and this coming from someone who can sweat at the very thought of HOT BUFFALO WINGS.
They're pricey though, so hopefully next time, the girl at the counter will listen to my order, I asked for a small order to sample and ended up with a medium for $11.00.

did I mention I'm eating leftovers for breakfast? ;D

We're excited to have Bon Chon in the neighborhood, we have brought home Bon Chon from the city a few times before on our way home from work.
Tonight we stopped by Bon Chon and picked up a menu and then called for delivery a little later.
My early review: Excellent.  Super quick delivery and yummy.
My only complaint is that their spicy is very spicy, I wish there was a medium between regular and spicy.
Overall, though, I'm happy with the change.

In the old Atomic Wings space. Opening is scheduled for October 1, according to the owner.

Right on the money. A good sign! :2thumbs:

With all the drunks in this town, I am shocked a buffalo wing joint did not survive.
What does Bon Chon Chicken have to offer?

It was never open late enough to enjoy that sort of niche. So maybe Bon Chon will learn from that and try to get the post bar crowd instead of the kids out on lunch crowd. Especially when Barcade opens up across the street.

well at least the space is ready for another restaurant so the city shouldn't hold them up with endless delays for permits,  the only changes should be cosmetic.  I predict it opens April 1, 2011.  :P

I agree that it's kind of odd to replace one failed chicken wing place with another. That said, the Korean-style fried chicken is unique and pretty damn good! Here's a good article on the phenomenon:
