Are you in a Historic District?  You might have to put wood windows in.

We've had very good experiences with Essex Replacement Door & Window Co Inc in Bloomfield. Dennis, the guy who runs the company, does the estimates and measurements himself, and he's a real character and a very nice man. Probably more expensive than the box store route, but we've been very happy with his work, replacing an exterior door, as well as all of our basement windows. He's also done doors and windows for several other members of my family, and all the work was great.

Their number is (973) 743-8603. Tell him i referred you.

has anyone ever bought windows and had windows installed by home depot or lowes?  i need 3 windows and the job is too small for RWC.

Or I'd also appreciate any other recommendations

Okay, here's the guy my sister will be using to do her windows....  I checked out some of his work, he's good.

He's a finish carpenter so I would imagine that reframing your window openings should not be a problem for him.

soshin, tell me about your old windows?

maybe you want to get rid of some of them?

There will be mullions a-plenty (well about 7 or 8 of them) by the time I am finished.  However I can't say when that will be as I have been too lazy to get off me arse and call for estimates.  Regardless I will PM you when we are ready to start.

What are you planning to do with them?  A friend of ours gave us this old window she had scavenged, re-paned and then coated (the glass) with Gold leaf as a wedding present.  It was definitely the strangest wedding present we got but it is still my favorite.

Hey Sosh,

I know I promised to name two contractors, but I am hesitant to recommend the guy my sister is using until he finishes the work.  But, the guy I always call on for all masonry work is PAT ALLEN 201.233.8521.  He had two companies for a while, so the name is either Stone Creations or Ace Masonry, I can't remember what the name of the company is that he owns now. Whatever the case is, he's totally reliable and has always met his deadlines.  He never fails to show up when he says he will and he stays on a job until it's done.   As far as pricing goes, like I said, I had a brick wall knocked out for 1400, but I have heard that if it's beyond his expertise, like if he has to hire someone to move your electrical, or plumbing, than he tends to bid on the higher end.
When the work finishes up over at my sista's house, I'll update this post...

worm, thanks for the mention of Pat Allen.  I had him over to give us an estimate this morning; nice guy and showed up on time.  His company is Ace Masonry which is a member of the Better Business Bureau (http://www.trenton.bbb.org/nis/newsearch2.asp?ID=1&strBCode=02210000&ComID=0221000003000858&ComName=Ace+Masonry+%26+Builders%2C+Inc).  If/when we have him do the work for us I'll update this post too. . .

I thought the Replacement WIndow Company, http://www.replacementwindowcompany.com/

They replaced all my windows and also redid a door and windows frames. I did not have more extensive work done, but I got the impression that they would.

It's worth a try calling them. I was very pleased with their work, their service, and they are a local company with no bad marks against them in the BBB record.

They might even remember me... or my pitbull :0)

Worm, it's a woodframe house so I don't think that the masonary work is necessary, however I would love any references you have, PM me if you don't want to post them.

Also, the wife was thinking about knocking a wall down too, who did you use for that job?  We already know it is a supporting wall so it's likely to be ax expensive (though 1400 doesn't sound like as much as I was expecting).

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated and returned in beers at the Park Tavern.  ;D

Depends on what you're exterior walls are made of.  If it's brick, I would imagine that would involve not only cutting the masonry, but fitting in a steel lintel.  If its wood, than you're talking about cutting away the drywall, and reframing the opening.  I recently had a  structural brick wall opened up, and it cost me around 1400, just to have the opening cut and the lintel put in.  I am planning on putting in some windows in a part of the house that does not have any, but I will be doing that work myself.  In that case, it's wood frame and so it's not too difficult to cut out the studs and reframe for the window opening. My sister is having all of her window openings enlarged and fit with historically accurate ones (she's in hamilton park) and I can refer you to her contractor if you don't want to touch any of the work yourself.  If you want to be the gc and hire someone to cut the opening and another company to install, than I can recommend someone for masonry work.

New windows
I want to put in some new windows but these are not straight replacement windows I am looking for - I want to replace a couple of 4ft by2ft windows with something that is more floor to ceiling and takes out a good chunk of wall.

Can anyone give me an idea of the process involved in this?  It seems that most window companies only do replacements for existing windows and don't really get involved in more construction orientated jobs.

1.  Is this the kind of thing that I need to hire an architect for?
2. Any recommendations on a company to do the final job.

Thanks
