Definitely.  They keep claiming they don't have any vehicles, though, so it's a scramble to find something to replace it.

Do you have a confirmation e-mail from them?  If so they should under their contract of carriage have to be able to supply you with an upgrade or even pay the difference if you have to rent a car from anther company at a higher price.  Talk to a manager.

Well, no review for Budget.  They 'lost' our reservation and now don't have any cars available.  Nice!

It's been a while thankfully, but IIRC I took the PATH to Noork and then a bus. I also was not charged for the airport tax based on my home address - a local renting a car, vs. a transient traveller.

EWR long-term parking lots are inexpensive, and you can easily get to one of the many in-airport rental car locations via monorail/shuttlebus. Here's a map.

that is a great idea!  thanks!

does anyone know of a car rental place with nearby parking for a few days that is safe and moderately priced?

i am taking a road trip, but dont necessarily want to drive *my* car, but i will if i have to...

does the mall have daily parking for, about 4 days?

i won't be around to move my car for opposite side parking....

budget on 1st is definitely the cheapest rental car place in JC (at least downtown) that i know of, however they are quite disorganized. i always rent the smallest car possible, and twice i've gotten stuck with SUVs from them, because they didn't have the cars. once, i had to wait for about 30 minutes for the cars to show up. luckily, i was hungry so i killed time, but i could see that sort of thing driving someone mad.

bottom line
budget=budget

I've never used them, but there's a Budget Rent A Car office at 181 1st Street between Marin Blvd. and Manila Ave.

Thanks, MCA!  I'll write a review when we get back.

My biggest gripe with all of the rental car places in JC is that they are closed on sunday. You can return it on sunday but you will be charged for returning it on monday.

At the aforementioned Budget Rent A Car at 181 1st Street, a sign states they are open on Sundays until 2 or 3pm.

There is a Budget in the mall parking garage (near sears) and an Avis in the Double Tree Suites (near BJ's). I have used both and they are about the same in price and quality.

I recently got bumped to a PT Cruiser which has acceptable gas mileage. I think that is one of the exciting thing about renting a car you never know what you'll get but it sucks if you have to take a gas guzzler you could always tell them to go screw and take your business elsewhere.

For rental cars I like Fox Rental Cars in California and Arizona.

I've used Enterprise at A&P a few times over the years. My only complaint is that, like all companies, they never have the car your reserved. Once, for a 700-mile round trip, they gave me a huge Dodge Ram pickup.  ::) They said they'd give it to me at the cost of a Neon.  ::) When I told them I'd have to buy almost $100 more gas to make the trip, they reduced the price even more.  ::)

Same thing happened to us at the rental place in Wisconsin (driving to Michigan- except we wound up with a freakin' minivan.  mmmmmmbooooo.

I have never used the one next to A&P but I do like Enterprise in general.  I have NYC friends who use that one because it's way cheaper than the ones in Manhattan.

The Entreprise at LAX is totally bizarre experience -- they chat you up like they are trying to recruit you to the Church of Enterprise.  But the cars are good and the rates are fair.  If they would just shut up, it would be perfect.   ;D

Hey there - zip car won't work for us, so I need to get a rental car for an overnight trip.  Which companies have you guys used in downtown jc?  I know there's something at the mall and another one by one of the hotels.  We'd have to return the car on a Sunday, if that makes a difference.  TIA for your input/suggestions.
