Went back Friday night and food is still as good as ever. Now that Nha Trang Place on Newark Ave. has closed, I expect this place to get more crowded on the weekends.

PS: the grilled lemongrass squid is a must-try.

Just went here. Soooooooo happy this is just a few blocks away. Spring rolls and grilled pork chop for me, pho for the ladies, and of course my son ordered some honking huge plate of meat which cost twice as much as everyone else's. I had a NJBCo Pale Ale ($4!) and the bill came out to just over $50 for the four of us, including tip.

Huge plus for the hood. I will be going here frequently.

Hey, did you see the Jersey Journal article about the shootings on Wayne Street?

The other main differences are the full bar, and the fact that New Thanh Hoai will deliver (with a $19.95 minimum). In conclusion, a fine addition to the local dining scene.

Do they deliver anywhere in Jersey City or just downtown?

The menu doesn't say.

So I went to the newly opened New Thanh Hoai (234 10th Street) for lunch on Presidents Day. The reno/conversion from The Embankment to a Vietnamese restaurant was well done. The bar is pretty much intact; the dining room has lots of rectangular tables for 8 in the middle (possibly shareable for parties of 4 or less) and 4-tops around the sides for 2-4 people. It feels a little crowded and I imagine it'll be loud when full. They're also using the party room in the back as another dining room. I don't know what the upstairs space is, yet. Overall, very nice ambience —you could even bring the parents when they visit.

I only had the pho for lunch and it tasted pretty much the same as their other restaurant Nha Trang Place (249 Newark Avenue), which leads me to believe the food will be the same, i.e., awesome, authentic Vietnamese food that people routinely drive in from other counties to eat. I've also compared the menus side by side and they are largely similar. New Thanh Hoai's menu is slightly smaller, but they serve banh mi for those of you with the sandwich jones (otherwise, in Jersey City you can only get them at Nha Trang Market on weekends). There's a slight price hike — about 50¢ more for the soups, appetizers and rice dishes, and $1 more for main dishes on average. Not too bad.

The other main differences are the full bar, and the fact that New Thanh Hoai will deliver (with a $19.95 minimum). In conclusion, a fine addition to the local dining scene.

Signs are up for "New Thanh Hoai Vietnamese Cuisine" and a notice on the door says they are opening on February 17th.

Darna: could someone please splain to me why a person in a gang is called a gangbanger but a gangbang has nothing to do with gang activity?

shahaggy: can't believe I'm saying this but +1 jehu

[02:58 PM] MCA: it's not stalking, it's caring enough to find out things she won't tell you herself

[01:35 PM] shahaggy: fine but jehu's correct

TheFang: as much as it pains me to say, jehu might be right.

One time, I hired a monkey to take notes for me in class. I would just sit back with my mind completely blank while the monkey scribbled on little pieces of paper. At the end of the week, the teacher said, "Class, I want you to write a paper using your notes." So I wrote a paper that said, "Hello! My name is Bingo! I like to climb on things! Can I have a banana? Eek, eek!"

Is "Same Staff" different from "Same Owners?" Will Nha Trang stay open?

Work is being done on the old Embankment space; doesn't seem like the interior will change that much. There's also a sign on the door:

"ATTENTION ALL CUSTOMERS:

WE ARE THE SAME STAFF AS THE ONES FROM NHA TRANG PLACE RESTAURANT AT 249 NEWARK AVE. WE SIMPLY MOVED HERE AT 234 10TH STREET AS THE NEW THANH HOAI RESTAURANT. WE HOPE TO SERVE YOU SOON IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

SINCERELY,
THANH HOAI STAFF"

I am looking forward to this^^^

saw the flashing sign this AM "new pho restaurant" think it what it scrolled!

Nha Trang is hands-down my favorite place to eat in all of JC.  Who needs fancy decore when you have fresh squid for $8 and an enormous bowl of pho for $7.  If you want a fancy atmosphere got eat at Box.

Couldn't agree more to all of your points (especially that they're all exceptionally friendly) - but let's be real, that place has seen better days.  It's definitely in the category of "I'd probably stop eating there if I ever actually saw what goes on in the kitchen"

Agreed.  Speaking of which--ever spent time in the kitchen of a large hospital?  If not, don’t ever!

Hopefully it (Nha Trang) retains the same gross-but-delicious quality of the current joint.

Too many great cheap, delicious joints decide they want to class it up by moving into nicer space, increase prices, lose loyal customers, and go out of business.

Gross??  Nha Trang?

I used to work in a steel mill where the rolling machines sprayed fountains of rendered animal fat on the work surfaces as a lubricant.  The freakish thing was that despite the inescapable festering odor, it had the effect of making everybody hungry.  Now that’s gross.  Nha Trang is mostly just delicious, and of course the staff is exceptionally friendly.
