Downtown Jersey City converted firehouse is for rent now that Snooki, JWoww have moved on
Published: Thursday, July 26, 2012, 3:00 AM
Daniel Reyes/The Jersey Journal

Fans of MTV's "Snooki & JWoww" who are upset about the stars' possible departure from Jersey City next season can hold on to a piece of television fame for only $12,000 a month.

The converted 1860s firehouse at 38 Mercer St. in Jersey City that housed the duo during the filming of their "Jersey Shore" spinoff is up for rent and boasts a $12,000 asking price.

The four-bedroom, three-bath, 4,700-square-foot unit lies two blocks from the Grove Street PATH and includes a private rooftop deck and gourmet kitchen, and can comfortably sleep eight people.

The spinoff wrapped up filming in late March.

The production company initially wanted the show filmed in Hoboken, but the idea that the pair might bring "Jersey Shore" antics to the Mile Square City didn't sit well with Hoboken officials.

It's been reported the show's next season will be filmed in Morristown. Go figure.

Snooki and JWoww move to "the city" in pilot of reality show filmed in Jersey City
Published: Thursday, June 21, 2012, 10:30 PM

By Stephanie Musat/ For The Jersey Journal

The long-awaited series starring Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley chronicling their polarizing time in Jersey City aired Thursday night without any real mention of the city as the duo decided it was time to move out of mom and dad's and away from their boyfriends to have a last hoorah together.

They're best friends, if you didn't know. They said it multiple times throughout the episode – hence prompting them to find a place to live in "the city," as they referred to their new home. Which city - New York City, Jersey City, Union City? Those outside Hudson County may never know.

But alas, it is in fact Jersey City where they spent five weeks in March and April filming the aptly-titled "Snooki and JWoww" - despite the fact that the girls only mention the full city's name once through the 30-minute pilot episode, with a brief shot of the "Welcome to Jersey City" sign by the Holland Tunnel gracing b-role.

Instead, the colloquial "the city" was used as the girls searched for their perfect apartment. Before they began to look, they broke the news to their respective family members. Snooki, who lived with her parents, decided it was time to grow up and move into her own place before she became 40 years old, living in her parent's basement – a huge concern of hers, she admitted.

Her parents sat her down and talked to her about the responsibilities of home ownership and managing money - without once mentioning the rumored $100,000 per episode the duo is getting each for the series, along with thousands of dollars from magazine covers and appearances.

JWoww, on the other hand, recently moved in with her boyfriend Roger, and saw the opportunity to move in with Snooki as a last fling before turning 30 in three years. Roger questioned the idea, but in return declared a stripper pole will be installed in their living room in her absence, which seemed like a peace offering for the two.

So with the blessing of their family members, they traveled to "the city" to check out apartments. Snooki claims she saw the Empire State Building while driving by Grove Street. No, Snooki, it's not.

She eventually meets JWoww, huddled on the stoop of an apartment in windy Jersey City, as it was March when they began filming.

The realtor shows up and shows them several apartments along Mercer Street, but the girls were concerned about the neighbor being family-centric, so they asked where the realtor, wearing a sear-sucker blazer and loafers, lived. He said Greenville.

So, the girls head over to "Greenville" to be greeted by haggard lawns and renegade toilets scattered about them. Snooki is concerned with the age of the buildings. "There might have been murders and homicides," she said blankly. "Wait, are they the same thing?"

So to ease their concerns, they end back up on Mercer Street, standing in front of the red garage door of a retired firehouse from 1855. Nothing bad has ever happened there.

After a brief discussion (and complaining about the approximately 15 stairs to the top), the girls decide the renovated loft is for them. It's the first look inside the apartment, as the press was barred from the inside during filming. The loft is big and open, with two identical rooms, donning "Fire Chief" and "Captain" on the doors. Snooki decides she is the chief, and JWoww obliges.

But before the girls can sign the lease, Snooki had a secret she needed to tell JWoww – a secret that was alluded to in the beginning of the episode during a conversation with her mother about why she wanted to move in with JWoww, rather than her boyfriend, Jianni.

Spoiler alert: she's engaged. And as we find out later in the series, and thanks to countless magazine covers, she is also pregnant, an inevitable plot line as the girls convert the firehouse into what Snooki considers the ultimate bachelorette pad.

Without alcohol in the picture, the show will rely on the dynamic and unfiltered dialogue between the two, with gems in the first episode like "don't wipe your vagina on my bagel."

Some Jersey City businesses made brief cameos, including the cooking lesson at Made With Love Bakery and the infamous dog dying incident at K9dergarten that PETA condemned. But based purely on the first episode, it seems that Jersey City's role in this show will be minimal, squashing concerns that Jersey City will become the next fist-pumping, Guido-living capital of the state.

That title still remains with the shore.

The next episode of "Snooki and JWoww" airs Thursday, June 28 at 10 p.m. on MTV, where the girls become Susy Homemaker as zebra-printed couches and trips to Kennedy Department Store put their signature touches in the apartment.

My $5 still goes to them painting JC as a shit hole.  In a "OMG, look what Snooki and JWoww had to put up with!" kind of way.

Anyone want to take odds against me?

Given that these are people who choose to spend most of their time down in Seaside, I find that to be impossible.

"Jersey Shore" spin-off slated to bring in millions of dollars for Jersey City
Published: Thursday, April 05, 2012, 5:48 PM
Updated: Thursday, April 05, 2012, 7:38 PM
Stephanie Musat/ For The Jersey Journal

It's hard to deny that Snooki and JWoww in Jersey City polarized the city, but regardless if the community embraced the duo or not, one thing is clear: The show will be a cash cow for the city.

Jersey City has the potential to rake in more than $4 million in revenue once the show airs, said Steven Gorelick, executive director of the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission.

Gorelick said Seaside Heights brought in between $4 million and $6million thanks to increased tourism and interest after the show's notorious antics became a hot spot for travelers.

Jersey City could go through the same limelight, Gorelick said, if the show, "Snooki and JWoww vs. The World," taps into the same fan base.

"It's difficult to predict whether it will have the same effect as in Seaside Heights," he said. "Seaside attracts thousands and thousands of people. Hopefully there will be a great effect for Jersey City – people eating at the restaurants and shopping – that will go well beyond the value. That would be ideal."

Jersey City was already given an economic boost during the five weeks of filming. The 30-person film crew from 495 Productions was housed in hotel rooms at The Westin Hotel – including two rooms designated for Snooki and JWoww if they wanted a change of scenery from their Mercer Street home.

The crew ate at local restaurants and shopped at more than 40 Jersey City establishments, in what some store owners consider prime advertising for the area.

Joseph Castro, owner of Bar Majestic, said he served 30 to 40 extra meals a week due to the "Jersey Shore" buzz, including a night where Snooki, JWoww and their significant others stopped in for dinner.

But he expects the full "Jersey Shore" effect to hit Jersey City after the show airs, estimating that filming alone brought in a few hundred people without the show on television yet.

MTV has not released an airing date yet.

"I'm confident in the product we presented," he said. "We showed a beautiful neighborhood, lovely neighbors and beautiful architecture. This can't be anything but positive."

Jennifer Morill, a spokeswoman for Jersey City, said that dozens of businesses – from restaurants to nail salons - benefited from their stay downtown, pumping thousands of dollars into the local economy, and giving these stores a global platform to "market themselves."

But perhaps the most marketable thing to come out of the spin-off is the Mercer Street apartment that could fetch between $10,000 and $12,000 per month if the owners decide to rent it, said real estate broker Lawrence Perlaki, who specializes in renting and selling historic Downtown Jersey City properties.

"It's sort of like George Washington slept here, now that Snooki slept here," he said.

Carmen Mendiola, owner of Hard Grove Cafe, said she hopes the show will give credibility to the city that will encourage visitors to stop by and enjoy what Jersey City has to offer.

She said she got calls all the time asking if Snooki and JWoww filmed in her cafe, which she takes as a positive sign about the interest.

"They have a following," she said. "And we got the benefits of that."

But some owners, like Jeff Favia of Powerhouse Lounge, are waiting for the crowds to come in once the show is put on television. A significant portion of an episode was filmed at the Powerhouse Lounge, which Fabian expects to become a draw of his business.

"It can give us very good exposure," he said, noting that the attention may give Jersey City an added boost to rival Hoboken as a nightlife spot. "They shot in some nice places, and if and when it starts airing, I think we will all do well."

Snooki and JWoww put Jersey City in their rear-view mirrors after passing out cookies and oranges as good-bye gifts

Last day of filming for Snooki and JWoww gallery (23 photos)

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley hugged good-bye, got into their respective vehicles and left Jersey City yesterday, closing out five weeks of filming their “Jersey Shore” spin-off.

“Don’t forget I’m pregnant,” Snooki, who is engaged to boyfriend Jionni LaValle, yelled to JWoww, before she climbed into her unmistakable pink and black Cadillac pickup and drove away from the converted Mercer Street firehouse she and JWoww called home for a few weeks.

Before they left town, the “Jersey Shore” celebs knocked on the doors of neighbors to pass out cookies and oranges. Two residents slammed doors in their faces. Snooki responded with an upbeat “Love you.” Four neighbors did answer their doors and graciously accepted the parting gifts.

Earlier in the day, the boyfriends LaValle and Roger Mathews loaded up the vehicles.

“I’m happy that they’re leaving,” said Linda Jameson, who stopped by the house to check out the stars. “They didn’t bother me much, but at least it’s one less thing to worry about.

“I don’t have to worry about being stopped when they’re filming or worry about what restaurants to go to in case they are there,” she said.

A sizable crowd formed outside 38 Mercer St. yesterday, as locals snapped photos of the reality TV stars.

“I wanted to get a picture before they leave,” said Nicholas Remin. “It’s cool they spent some time here . . . My town will be on television.”

Police on Snooki Duty Face Regular Criticism from Bystanders

Police on Snooki Duty Face Regular Criticism from Bystanders
By Adam Robb • Mar 23rd, 2012

Update: JCPD internal affairs has since exonerated the officers involved in the Tuesday incident outside Synergy Fitness.

Earlier this month, on the eve of US Weekly‘s announcement Snooki was pregnant and engaged, Jersey City saw its largest influx of paparazzi.

Nearly 20 photographers were caught up in a obstacle course of passing pedestrians and interested bystanders who wound through the Jersey Shore stars’ loose perimeter of security guards and production crew as they navigated a two block stretch of downtown, between Snooki, inside K9dergarten and JWoww, parked two blocks away on Jersey Ave.

Police and photographers still best learning how to engage one another that day decried the other’s overzealousness, but no skirmish appeared to warrant an official complaint until, one week later, a police report was filed.

As the Jersey Journal first reported, one local resident took such action after a production member, arms outspread, made contact with the man while ushering him to safety, warning he was “about to get run over by paparazzi.”

It was just one of three times that day no good deed would go unpunished. (read more)

Owner of Downtown Jersey City property where Snooki and JWoww are staying says she never heard of them before rental deal
Published: Sunday, March 18, 2012, 4:27 PM
Updated: Sunday, March 18, 2012, 7:18 PM
Kate Kowsh/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy is right. Snooki and JWoww have been good for the Jersey City economy -- especially when it comes to the worth of the converted firehouse where they are staying on Mercer Street.

"Now that it has the connotation that she (Snooki) rented it, I'm sure that there are people out there, because of her celebrity status, that it will be a desirable item when they move out," said local real estate broker Lawrence Perlaki, who specializes in renting and selling historic Downtown Jersey City properties.

The building, which boasts tin walls, a spiral staircase (but no pole) and loft-like open space, was first occupied by volunteer firefighters in 1855, according to Fire Director Armando Roman, who added that in 1871 the building became the new quarters for both Engine Company 3 and a Battalion Chief.

Those companies moved out around 1961, and the property later sold to a private owner for $80,000 in 1980, according to city records. Tax Assessor Ed Toloza estimates the building's current market value at roughly $476,000.

Current owners Russell and Andrea Read purchased the property in 1997 for $320,000 and paid roughly $10,400 in property taxes last year, according to tax records.

"We lived there for nearly a decade and raised our three kids there," Andrea Read said in an e-mail. "Our youngest son, Jack, was even born upstairs in the firehouse in 2000."

Read said she and her family don't watch television. In fact, she had never seen "Jersey Shore" and never heard of two of the TV show's biggest attractions, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley, before the production company came knocking.

"Our biggest concern was that the filming of the show not be an ongoing hassle for the neighbors," Read said.

"It may in fact be a little strange, but intriguing to see the show after it airs," she added. "We'll be looking for the details that remind us of home."

A published poet and academic, Read co-founded the nonprofit Newforest Institute with her husband when they moved to Maine in 2007 to live on a farm. The organization tries to connect the way people make a living with their environment. The couple is now based in Kuwait.

Read declined to say how much rent she is collecting in rent from producers of the Snooki/JWoww spin-off.

Real-estate broker Michael Loundy told the Jersey Journal last month that his real estate agency rents out the Seaside Heights beach house where the "Jersey Shore" cast filmed several seasons of "Jersey Shore" for as much as $2,500 per night.

If the Reads decide to keep renting the house after the party girls leave town in a few weeks, they could fetch some where between $10,000 and $12,000 per month in rent for the place, Perlaki guessed. "It's sort of like George Washington slept here, now that Snooki slept here," he said.

Hizzzoner :healy: 's decision to permit the filming is paying big dividends for his administration politically and for the JCPD in cushy overtime.
Is this income included in earnings calculations for retirement/pension benefits?  If so. how much of those $$ will (continue to) be provided by 495 Productions, and how much by the taxpaying citizens of our fair city?

While Snooki and JWoww are relaxing in Cancun, 4 Jersey City cops are watching the house
Published: Thursday, March 15, 2012, 3:00 AM

By Stephanie Musat/ For The Jersey Journal

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley may be taking off the next few days for some R&R in Mexico, but a team of four Jersey City police officers is still stationed outside their Mercer Street home. Snooki and JWoww left yesterday for Cancun to celebrate Spring Break. But even though the girls are away, police are stationed in front of the converted firehouse on Mercer Street.

The contract the city signed with 495 Productions, the company in charge of the “Jersey Shore” spin-off the two reality-TV stars are filming in Jersey City, calls for 24-hour surveillance for six weeks, the length of time of the filming permit. A private security team escorted the duo to Newark Airport yesterday.

With all the protection, the “Jersey Shore” girls have been safe and sound in Jersey City, except for a couple of minor incidents. Bumper stickers have been stuck on Snooki’s customized Cadillac Escalade and someone threw trash in the back of her pickup.

“People might think they can get away with things because they aren’t home,” a police officer said. “We are here to make sure nothing happens to their property.”

The girls return to their temporary home on Saturday.

JWoww slapped with $54 souvenir by Jersey City parking enforcement
Published: Friday, March 09, 2012, 3:00 AM
Stephanie Musat/ For The Jersey Journal

You won’t be seeing her face on a Post Office wall any time soon, we imagine, but Jenni “JWoww” Farley has run afoul of the law in Jersey City while shooting her “Jersey Shore” spin-off show.

Farley and her co-star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi left their Mercer Street digs on Wednesday to visit Crystal Sun Nail & Spa at the corner of Warren and Essex streets. But instead of finding a legit parking spot, Farley parked her BMW a few feet from a fire hydrant, police said.

The Jersey City Independent website reported that when a Jersey City Parking Authority enforcement officer moved to ticket the vehicle, the enforcement officer was initially waved away by a Jersey City police officer.

But law and order prevailed and JWoww received a ticket.

According to the Jersey City Municipal Court Violations Bureau, a ticket for parking too close to a fire hydrant carries a $54 fine.

It was a bad day all around for JWoww. TMZ reported that she has been slapped with a $150,000 lawsuit from her former landlord for allowing 495 Productions to film segments of the first season of “Jersey Shore” in her Long Island home.

Landlord Stuart Levine said he was not told about the filming, and was not given the option to say whether or not filming could take place on one of his properties.

In the meantime, Snooki is making news by the minute.

She revealed this week that she is 15 weeks pregnant and got engaged to her boyfriend and father of the baby, Jionni LaValle, at the W Hotel in Hoboken on Valentine’s Day.

Where's The Situation? Cast of Jersey Shore visits Jersey City for fifth season finale
Published: Monday, March 05, 2012, 3:03 AM
Andrew Steadman/The Jersey Journal

Jersey Shore Filming at Powerhouse gallery (4 photos)

The number of “Jersey Shore” cast members in Jersey City yesterday included more than Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley, at least for a few hours.

Already in town filming a spin-off to the wildly successfully MTV reality-TV show, Snooki and JWoww were joined yesterday at the Powerhouse Lounge on Marin Boulevard by “Jersey Shore” cast mates to tape a finale special for Season Five of the show, according to sources.

Dozens of young people started forming a line outside the nightspot at First Street around 4:30 p.m.

The production staff slowly began letting people inside around 6 p.m.

There was no sign of the Jersey Shore cast members outside the building and the windows were covered with heavy curtains. But people waiting to be admitted confirmed they were there for a “Jersey Shore” filming.

Ashley Noor, of New York, heard about the chance to be on the show through a friend who works at MTV. Individuals interested in being on the show applied through On Set Productions, a company that casts extras and audience members for MTV show appearances, she said.

“We’re just doing this for fun,” Noor said, referring to herself and her friend, Josie Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, also a New Yorker, said she was kept in the dark about the specifics of the filming and only found out yesterday where the event was taking place.

“You don’t know where it’s going to be, you don’t know if there’s going to be food,” Rodriguez said.

The recap special was expected to feature six of the eight “Jersey Shore” cast members. Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and Ronnie Ortiz-Magro were not expected to attend yesterday’s taping.

It was recently announced that The Powerhouse Lounge, which has become a favorite of Snooki and JWoww since they’ve been in town, is up for sale for $1.5 million.

Snooki and JWoww are in town filming a spin-off that will reportedly be called “Snooki and JWoww vs. The World.” They are staying at a converted firehouse on Mercer Street in Downtown and have been seen shopping along Central Avenue and in McGinley Square.
