It's open! Has anyone been yet?

Yes! I went there for drinks on Friday. Food service was to start on Wed/Thurs. Loved it. Great vibe.

The manager advised that the menu will be 100% available within a week or two; the wine bar should open in 4 -6 weeks and the downstairs will be closer to the end of the year. Sad to hear the whiskey bar will open next year :(

Waiting for the whiskey bar/lounge to open soon!

No, but the owner likes to bounce checks.

Who knows what else he's cutting corners on.

All I can think about is roller disco now, what with short shorts coming back into style and all.

I like the roller disco idea.  Or maybe even a roller-bowling alley!

Anarchist bookstore. Or an Olive garden. That would be cool.

A roller disco.

Like we need another roller disco. How about a pizzeria? Or even a nail salon.

So far, no TVs installed. So that's a huge plus right there. Only getting patrons will help keep the vision alive. Hairy, what would you rather see there?

just the fact that these people own Powerhouse makes me believe they know nothing about creating the kind of place this location deservers to have.

Spoke to Jeff, the owner this morning.

While it sounds like a lot of places at one, it looks like they will be separate enough to carry their own identity.  For example, the wine bar has it's own entrance on Morgan and is separated by a wall with big windows into the bistro.

He's planning on keeping the bistro open 24 hours.

The speakeasy downstairs will also have it's own entrance. It won't be a nightclub, open all the time with DJs, rather it will host events from comedy to jazz to rock shows.  He assured me the sound proofing is above and beyond because he doesn't even want to hear the music downstairs in the bistro, which is planning to have a brasserie feel to it.  Apparently he already knows Dancing Tony (who can book shows there?) but also told him about Art House and Bryan Benninghove-- his eyes lit up when I said "gypsy jazz" as he really wants someone to be playing in the bistro in the evenings.

The whisky bar will eventually be where the Dunkin' Donuts is and will also feature coffee and it, again, will be it's own space with a passthrough in the wall for pizza delivery from the other side.  Slick.

He's planning on opening in 4 to 6 weeks.

"The Wine Bar", "The Whiskey Bar", "The Bistro"? Gee, I hope they saved some of their creative budget for the actual establishments.

This place has Hoboken written all over it.  Should go down well with the denizens who live behind the paper-thin walls of Grove Pointe.
"god hates you. you will all go to yuppie hell. in yuppie hell there is no starbucks or hole foods or sushi bar. in yuppie hell you will work 16 hours a day in a bodega. in yuppie hell your car will not start when the sweeper is coming down the street. in yuppie hell your doorman will terrorize you and have sex with your wife or husband...when you are at work....in the bodega. in yuppie hell you will go to the laundromat and lose your last quarter in a broken washing machine. in yuppie hell you will buy all your food and clothing at the 99 cent store. in yuppie hell there are no cell phones, you will use a pay phone. a filthy pay phone".      -   Cat_Man Dude

while I would really enjoy a new place to make me a mixed drink or ten I will remain apprehensive this does not seem like a format that the sort of drinks I'm after will flourish or actually be available.

Looking at the drawings, it looks like most of the ground floor space is taken up by a restaurant and bar area. The actual pizza takeout area takes up about a 10 X 20 sq. ft. area in the front left hand side, with its own street entrance and a pass-through to the restaurant.

Glad to see that space being filled - but ugh, not another pizza place.  I wonder if any of these owners do market research in the area.  How many more pet supply stores, nail salons, hair salons ( I have 3 on my block alone!), pizzerias (Two Boots is opening up a couple hundred feet away), asian fusion restaurants, do we really need here?

This is probably why a lot of the businesses here fail -aside from the repetitions of the same idea/service, the businesses here need to concentrate on quality!  If you really think about it, it's really not that we lack diversity in restaurants in JC- we have Chinese, Vietnamese, Asian Fusion, Italian, Latin, American, etc.,  it's just that what we do have for the most part, really sucks.

Bistro at Grove Square
116 Newark Avenue
Jersey City, NJ 07302

I was :nerd: ing in the window of the large empty commercial space next to Dunkin Donuts at the Grove St. PATH Plaza and happened to see blueprints for a restaurant and takeout pizza place on the ground floor and a nightclub in the basement (!!) I heard from a friend that it's the same owner as the Powerhouse Lounge, which happens to be for sale. It would make sense that he needs capital for this new venture.
