The Jersey JournalWhat comes to mind when you think of a cemetery? The volunteers at the Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery hope soon you will think of live performances.
Their sampler performance of Shakespeare’s “Seven Ages of Man” entitled “All The World’s A Stage” and performed by Actors Shakespeare Company of New Jersey City University will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m.
“A lot of people don’t realize that cemeteries are for the living,” said Eileen Markenstein, the president of the park’s volunteer Board of Trustees. “The cemetery is a living history museum. It’s a beautiful memorial park.”
The six-acre cemetery was abandoned four years ago but was saved by volunteers who wanted to preserve its history.
The cemetery is maintained and operated entirely by the volunteer board and funded by donations. Events like this one raise money to keep it open.
“It’s really all up to us to raise. We’re constantly fundraising,” said Markenstein. “We’re very excited to be doing events like these.”
The cemetery is located at 435 Newark Avenue in Jersey City. Admission to the performance is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for children. There will be refreshments. Call (201) 707-0738 for more information.
