Hudson County locals line up for glimpse of Space Shuttle Enterprise as it leaves Jersey City shipyard for Intrepid destination

The Space Shuttle Enterprise left the Weeks Marine shipyard in Jersey City yesterday morning around 9:40 a.m. and made the river trip to its temporary home at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum in New York City.

For Chrystal Hellinger of Bayonne, bringing her daughter Evelyn to the Jersey City shipyard to catch a glimpse of the prototype orbiter was worth Evelyn missing a day of school.

“It’s something very historic. We’re lucky to have it right stop right here by Jersey City and Bayonne,” she said.

Jocelyn Jakih of Jersey City made sure to wake up early to bring her 2-year-old niece Eva Torres to catch a glimpse of the shuttle as it headed out of the port on a barge.

“We missed the flyover, but wanted to make sure to see it while it was still here,” she said.

By 11:45 a.m., the barge carrying the precious cargo in the Hudson River was clearly visible from Boulevard East in Weehawken where a crowd of people jockeyed for the best viewing spots in Hamilton Park.

“It’s just such a great historical thing that fills you with pride. We picked the perfect spot right here,” said Peggy Mawdslei, a Westwood resident.

While some were able to catch a glimpse of the historic flyover of Enterprise strapped to a 747-aircraft last month, others were seeing the orbiter for the first time.

“This is the closest I’ve gotten to the shuttle, but I’ll wait a year or so before seeing it (at the Intrepid museum) after the crowds go through,” said Rich Aschofm, who made the trip from Hackettstown.

SERIOUSLY?
New York damages space shuttle: Enterprise dinged up on Jersey joy ride as Space City steams
BY SARAH RUFCA

The space shuttle Enterprise suffered wing damage en route to New York City's Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on Sunday.

After piggybacking onto a souped-up NASA Boeing 747 from Virginia to New York's JFK Airport, the Enterprise was heading by barge to the museum, which is housed in an aircraft carrier docked on Manhattan's west side.

But not before a stop at Weeks Marine in Jersey City. New Jersey. Sure, technically it was on the way, but that's kind of like lending your sister a dress for a wedding and finding out she wore it to a strip club instead.

The water route included some logistical challenges including navigating through and under the South Channel Subway Bridge, the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial, Gil Hodges Memorial and the Verrazano-Narrows bridge.

"The railroad bridge and the Cross Bay Bridge, each presented challenges," Dennis Jenkins, who was aboard the barge with Enterprise wrote in an e-mail obtained by CollectSpace. "The passage through the railroad bridge was narrow with only a few feet of clearance on each wingtip, while the Cross Bay was only a few feet higher than the vertical stabilizer . . .

"Mother nature did not smile on us. Just as the barge entered the railroad bridge, the wind caught it and pushed the right wing into the bridge abutment."

You know what, New Jersey? This is why you can't have nice things. (Of course, Enterprise should have gone to Houston instead).

The Intrepid confirmed the accident, describing the damage as a "rub panel foam protective layer of the wingtip of Enterprise [grazing] the protective wood piling bumpers in the water designed to bumper vessels."

Luckily the damage appears to be limited to the foam casing, according to Jenkins, sparing the structure and mechanisms.

Though officials said the incident would not delay the second part of the shuttle's journey to the Intrepid, the trip was delayed until Wednesday due to inclement weather.

Went by this morning, pretty good crowd, about a dozen psuedopro photogs set up, including one tool wearing a florescent green vest who taped out an exclusion zone.  Got a couple nice pics on my phone, on my bacefook page if you care.

And what were you wearing?

Bad weather delays moving Space Shuttle Enterprise upriver to Intrepid Museum
Published: Tuesday, June 05, 2012, 3:01 AM
Rafal Rogoza / The Jersey Journal

The Space Shuttle Enterprise is spending an extra day in a Jersey City shipyard due to poor weather conditions.

The shuttle was moved on Sunday by barge from John F. Kennedy International Airport to the Weeks Marine shipyard in Jersey City, and was slated to be moved to its summer residence at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in Manhattan today.

But yesterday’s bad weather prevented crews from properly preparing the ferry, so the boat ride to the Big Apple is now tentatively scheduled for tomorrow.

To commemorate the end of the NASA shuttle program, the Enterprise will be on exhibit at the museum starting on July 19.

On its way to JFK, the Enterprise passed over Hudson County on the back of a jumbo jet on April 27.

Flyover of space shuttle Enterprise still set to take place over the Hudson River

The third time may be the charm for the final flight of the space shuttle Enterprise. After canceling twice this week due to weather conditions, NASA is still set, as of this morning, to go ahead with the final flight of the space shuttle Enterprise attached to a 747 shuttle carrier aircraft tomorrow.

While the exact flight route isn’t known due to weather and operational issues, the agency has said a low-level flight will occur near several landmarks that will be visible from Hoboken and Jersey City before landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The window of time to catch the fight runs between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Friday. The Intrepid Air, Sea, and Space Museum has posted on its website the flight should be visible after 10 a.m.

Prime viewing spots will be available at mostly any location along the Hudson River below the George Washington Bridge. Liberty State Park in Jersey City as well as Pier A, Pier C, and Maxwell Place Park in Hoboken should all afford a glimpse of the shuttle atop the 747 near the Intrepid and the Statue of Liberty.

The weather is also expected to cooperate tomorrow. The National Weather Service is forecasting clear, sunny skies in the morning and temperate expected to be in the 50‘s with breezy conditions.

For those who may end up stuck inside or miss a glimpse of the fly-over, there will be another chance to view the shuttle -- albeit at a slower speed -- before it joins the collection of other aircraft at the Intrepid.

After the shuttle is taken off the 747, it will be placed on a barge and transported up the Hudson River in June, once again giving those near the water the opportunity to get a glimpse.
