Yet, what an ass.  Remember bringing yards of sand inside for beach/toga parties?

Now there's an outsided sandbox in Pavonia Park-inglot, the staging area between Silverman North and ArtHouse South.

I remember the stir abut Paris Plage a while back, can't believe it's been 10 years

It's no Oak Street Beach, fer sure.  Now if they'd put in stairs and a boatshed . . . .

The WJS's blog reviews our very own urban beach: Tanning on the Hudson.

"The concept of the urban beach started in Europe," Mr. Thom explained. "Paris is the most famous. I don't think you can swim at any urban beach in Europe. The whole idea is to bring a beach feeling that by natural geography would not be a beach. You still get the breeze, the ocean views."

"For example, the quality of the sand was better at Newport than it was in Sardinia—I found the latter somewhat coarse—though perhaps it wasn't quite as fine as on the Lido di Venezia, one of the best sand beaches in the world."
:palm:

Oohh, I get it.  Kinda like that super kewl hang called Serf Shitty. Very faux faux.

I guess the kitty litter patch in HamsilvermanPark qualifies, too. And the park itself, seen plenty of skin there.

Obviously the Jersey Journal distilled whatever press release they had down to pure fluff, yes, but no reason to slag Newport for it.  Go beat up the entire public relations industry instead for simply existing.

The actual grain-of-truth here is:

- the park is privately owned but unlike Gramercy Park in New York is made open to all during park hours.  There is no "admission" per se, ever.

- all playgrounds have slides and such and many have water features but this playground does have a fairly unusual climbing dome.  There are plenty of climbing nets in the region but this particular dome model only exists in Jersey City and Seattle at present in the US.

- the term "urban beach" is designer-speak and not well understood yet in the NY/NJ region.  It does not mean a beach in an urban area (there are plenty of those).  It is code for artificial-beach-with-sand-umbrellas-and-chairs-but-no-swimming-that-turns-inaccessible-urban-waterfronts-into-cool-faux-beach-hangouts.  There are quite a few "urban beaches" in Canada and Europe (see Toronto, Montreal, Paris, Vienna, etc.) but as design elements they are rare in the US.

Newport Beach Party 2012 gallery (30 photos)

Big smiles and full stomachs were common themes yesterday at Newport Green in Jersey City as people celebrated the summer at Newport’s Beach Party.

Showcasing some of the area’s top-rated Chefs, the 4.25-acre park also boasted the area’s only playground with an interactive water park, an outdoor Ping-Pong table and a boardwalk connecting to the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway.

According to a release, Newport is home to 14 restaurants, including Skylark on the Hudson, Babo Teahouse, Raaz, Boca Grande and Michael Anthony’s, that helped cater the event which included food, drinks and signature cocktails.

The Jersey Journal Photographer Katharine Egli was there to capture both the food and the fun!

My god do they have special AIR there as well?

Of course they do.  And you have to provide documented evidence that you're a resident before you're allowed to breathe it.

WTF is up with the ever-present grandstanding in Newport,  "the areas's only blah blah blah."
The first urban beach?  What a load of crap.  At lease I can throw a kayak in the river at Sinatra Park.
Who writes and apporves these press relases? I thought the evil fat potato wizard lady was gone?
Playgrounds with waterparks - Hamilton Park, Enos Jones, the elephants in the skating rink by the grocery store.
First of a kind rope web? 4 different jungle gyms?  My god do they have special AIR there as well?

Newport Beach Party planned next week
Published: Friday, July 20, 2012, 3:03 AM
The Jersey Journal

A beach party is coming to Newport next week. The Newport Beach Party is planned from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Newport Green, 700 Washington Blvd., at 14th Street.

The event is a local food festival with signature dishes by some of the area’s top-rated chefs from Newport’s 14 restaurants.

All ages are invited and admission is free. The Beach Party takes place at Newport Green, a 4.25-acre park featuring the first urban beach on the Hudson River, which was unveiled this spring by Gov. Chris Christie.

Newport Green also features the area’s only playground with an interactive water park, four different jungle gyms and a first-of-its-kind, rope-webbed climbing.
