When Oscar-nominated actor-turned-rapper-turned-hobo Joaquin Phoenix stopped by CBS's Late Show with David Letterman on Feb. 11, America got a firsthand glimpse of the la-la land where Phoenix evidently now resides. Where to begin — his lumberjack beard? His unwashed mane? The creepy, unnecessary shades? Or the catatonic, mumbling responses to admittedly ridiculous questions like, "How's that beard working out for ya?"
After several failed attempts to jolt Phoenix out of his stupor, Letterman finally resorted to biting sarcasm: "What can you tell us about your days with the Unabomber?" For its part, the crowd loved it. Phoenix, not so much. ("Are you f___ing serious?" he asked after Letterman sidekick Paul Shaffer let out a maniacal laugh.) Bidding his oddball guest adieu, Letterman quipped, "And, uh, Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight," before adding, "We owe an apology to Farrah Fawcett."

Hmm, I like how the NYT headline has "In deepest Brooklyn" in it whilst the accompanying photo sure looks like it has the beginning of the Pulaski Skyway in the background....
"god hates you. you will all go to yuppie hell. in yuppie hell there is no starbucks or hole foods or sushi bar. in yuppie hell you will work 16 hours a day in a bodega. in yuppie hell your car will not start when the sweeper is coming down the street. in yuppie hell your doorman will terrorize you and have sex with your wife or husband...when you are at work....in the bodega. in yuppie hell you will go to the laundromat and lose your last quarter in a broken washing machine. in yuppie hell you will buy all your food and clothing at the 99 cent store. in yuppie hell there are no cell phones, you will use a pay phone. a filthy pay phone".      -   Cat_Man Dude

Well, the movie is finally out -- read the Times review here. Interestingly, there's an accompanying audio slide show called Gray and the City that's all about the director's hard-on for shooting in the forgotten corners of NYC. No mention of Dirty Shitty, of course.

For you Real Estate fans, they're filming in this building, which was chosen partly for its interior courtyard (the characters live across the courtyard from each other and have scenes where they look at/talk to each other across it).

Just as it boggles the mind that all this inconvenience costs the production a mere $250 plus costs.

In NYC all permits are free. So at least JC is getting something for it.

Wow i had no idea. Productions still have to pay for police duty and parking tows and such though right?

You get one cop for free (though you do have to pay their overtime if filming goes over schedule for that day.) if you request them, any more then that production pays for and all parking production pays for as well.

There is also a special "department", for lack of a better term, that is just for movie and tv. It even says "Film/TV division" on their cars.

It boggles my mind that the cars aren't just towed to the holding area on Belmont in the park, or some other nearby holding area, like every film shoot in manhattan does when cars need to be cleared out.

Hollywood wake-up call, 6 cars towed

Kensington Avenue residents who lost parking on their street to make way for a movie production got an early wake-up call yesterday and some ended up with their cars towed.

Signs have been posted telling residents that parking on the street between Kennedy Boulevard and West Side Avenue is forbidden around the clock each weekday until Dec. 21, and warning them that any vehicles not complying would be towed.

In addition, letters have been posted in buildings and given to residents, telling them to move their cars off Kensington by 6 a.m. Monday.

Apparently, some people didn't get the memo.

Police arrived with a tow truck at 6 a.m. yesterday and had the street cleared, according to Kensington resident Gregory Zachar.

"They made a racket," he said about the loud sirens in the early morning hour.

Police spokesman Lt. Edgar Martinez confirmed that six cars were towed from the street, where parking is still allowed on weekends.

One was unregistered, four were registered in other towns, and one was registered to a Kensington resident who didn't answer numerous requests to come out and move the vehicle, Martinez said, adding that many other people on the street moved their cars willingly.

"Everyone else was no problem," he said.

"Two Lovers," starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joaquin Phoenix, started filming Thursday at the Gloria Gables apartment building on Kensington.

Residents, some of whom have been upset about the disruption got more replacement parking than originally planned, as well as a 24-hour police presence for people walking back from their cars, all at the filmmaker's expense.

They were informed last week that they could park on the north side of Belmont Avenue, between Kennedy Boulevard and West Side Avenue and in Lincoln Park up to but not in the traffic circle, Monday through Friday, for the next three weeks.

Jersey City charges a $250 permit fee for a production company to film in Jersey City, and requires $1 million in liability insurance, according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.

The film company, Two Lovers LLC, must also pay for off-duty police officers to provide around-the-clock security, for Parking Authority workers to put up signs, and for an off-duty fire inspector if one is needed, she said.
