Actually we totally ripped out our steam system.  The story is that Tullo came a few years back for the annual pre-season service on the boiler and found it was all rusted inside meaning it was leaking.  They gave me about a $7k estimate for a new boiler.  I then called up Royal Heating who had done great work for a neighbor and asked them for an estimate to rip out the boiler, piping, and radiatiors, install ductwork in the attic and basement, a pair of gas fired furnaces and a pair of air conditioners.  Obviously this came in well above $7k, but the price was entirely reasonable because we only have a 2-story house with ample space in the basement and attic for the ductwork and other equipment.

I know that a lot of people prefer radiant heat to forced air, but I grew up with forced air and have no problem with it, especially since we have a built-in humidifier as part of the system.  Our radiators were covered in 100 years of paint, took up huge amounts of wall space, were a potential burn hazard to kids, occasionally leaked, and were noisy.  I'm happy to see them gone.  The furnaces we installed are super efficient (which got us $600 in refunds from the state of NJ) and our heating costs are lower, but not hugely so.  This year might be a more marked difference as oil cost are really through the roof.  It also helped that we converted to a 2-zone system with programmable thermostats, so we're no longer forced to keep the downstairs warm overnight.

Thanks for the info cyclotronic.  Before we bought the house we had them remove the old underground tank and replace it with a new above ground one (and remediate the area).  I think the new tank has also helped avoid the debris problems that you mentioned.

Have you found that your gas bills are lower than your oil bills?  I assume you have a low pressure steam system (and still have it now that you use gas)?

One more thing -- I used to keep a close eye on this page when we had oil:

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/hopu/hopu.asp

It's showing the average price right now for residential heating oil in the US is $3.27 a gallon.  This is compared to about $2.40 all of last season.

We used Tullo Oil Company, but oil was nothing but a headache (and an expensive one at that) the 2-3 years we used it.  Some debris would get stuck in the lines about twice a season, leaving us without heat for the day or so it would take to get Tullo to come and take care of it under our service contract.  Your best bet is to get quotes from a few different companies, and then try to get them bidding against each other and see if you can lock in a fixed price for the season with the lowest bidder.

If your boiler is reaching the end of its lifetime, you should strongly consider converting to a gas-fired unit next time.  If you're sticking with oil and you still have an underground tank, you should properly abandon it and put a new tank in your basement.  It's never a question of will an underground tank leak, it's when will it leak.  Best to take care of it before that happens.

Who do you use to supply your heating oil and/or service your furnace and what price do you pay?

We have used

Majora Fuel
256 Kennedy Blvd
Bayonne, NJ 07002
Phone : (201) 339-1184

for the past year but I'm concerned that their prices are too high.  I have a delivery scheduled for Monday at a price of 3.459 a gallon.  I know prices have gone up significantly this year but it just seems really high.  Anyone else's experiences would be greatly appreciated.
